Spoilers!

I think that is expected now. The question is whether there's a second change in the batting, and if so, who comes in.

They shouldn't let the press know until it is announced. They can't keep it to themselves. One new batsman then on debut. Vince will be 670.

Nick Hoult is so confident about the squad he's reporting it as fact:

Cook Hales Compton Root Vince Stokes Bairstow Ali Broad Finn Anderson Ball

I'd be disappointed if I was Sam Robson and I saw Nick Compton getting picked ahead of me.

Hoult says in his piece that although Compton has struggled for runs nobody was banging the door down demanding selection through sheer weight of runs. Except Robson. And Tom Westley. Oh, and Daniel Bell-Drummond.

Hoult says "Cook could build a strong case for his Essex team-mate Tom Westley,
the in-form batsman in division two apart from Cook". But neither Hoult nor Cook appears to be bothering to make a case for Sam Robson who is in- form and in division one.

Funny that they said people who make early season runs will be in contention. Westley (650) made even more than Cook (523). Vince (275) is picked because Flower, Vaughan and Bayliss like him. He didn't need to make any.

So does anyone believe the saying "go to county cricket and score runs or take wickets"

Compo, hales and Finn can feel very lucky.

As can Ali, who's still apparently in the team because of his beard.

Just so I can be clear - are we pretending he is not averaging 91 at a strike rate of 72 this season?

Probably the worst player to play for England since Pattinson.

Are we talking about his sensational one day smash up or when he batted a day undefeated so nearly saving the test?

Hales and Finn, certainly. I wonder if they'll persist with Hales opening the batting after his performance in that role in South Africa.

Finn is not yet at the stage of his career where county form can be discounted (and may never be).

If I was Robson I'd be fairly demoralised, and looking up eligibility to see how long it is until he can play for Australia.

A few days a go the selectors said they were not just looking at players from division one who are in form, but the second tier as well. It looks like they were looking at neither and had the squad decided well in advance of the start of the season. Westley has been in fantastic touch and Robson has had a great start to the season, performing far better than Hales. Vince has scored one ton in a what has been a batsman's season.
