Another leak? I imagine the team is sent to the press before the official announcement with an embargo but either no one understands the concept of an embargo or gives a ****. I doubt these are leaks in the sense of some insider tipping off a mate in the pub. Or if it is, it's done with official approval, so not really a leak.

I think enough people have leaked this squad to make it true. Team for Brisbane

1. Cook
2. Stoneman
3. Vince
4. Root
5. Malan
6. Stokes
7. Bairstow
8. Ali
9. Woakes
10. Broad
11. Anderson

The obvious worries are:
1. Will 2, 3 and 5 contribute any runs? I have a good feeling about Stoneman. I reckon he's got the attitude for it. The Vince selection is somewhat bizarre. Plays some lovely shots but doesn't seem to worry many county attacks. Malan will almost certainly be replaced by Ballance at some point in the series.

2. What happens if Root or Stokes get injured? Simple, we're f***ed.

3. Will our seamers be as effective as the Aussie's? I think that Anderson and Broad will do a good job and Stokes will have one or two good spells. Woakes' lack of pace is a concern. More worrying is that our reserves are Jake Ball, who I don't rate and an uncapped youngster. Are they basically saying Steve Finn's career is over? They clearly don't trust Wood to get through 5 days either.

You would have seen him beating the bat twice an over for his first ten then. Freaky he didn't get wickets.

In future the ECB shouldn't release the squads, with an embargo, if the press can't be trusted. Is there any special reason why the press have to be told earlier than the rest of us?

Yes, so they can write articles about it for the morning papers or websites. I doubt the ECB care that the squad is announced before the official statement otherwise why does it happen so often?

I think you must be right, they don't really care. Don't think they should bother with the official announcement, although it will be interesting to hear if Stokes keeps the vice captaincy.

There are a few marginal selections but there are no outstanding cricketers who are simply being ignored IMO. I would have taken Lawrence and Leach ahead of Vince and Crane but the Aussies would still be the hottest of hot favourites on their home soil. Given that TRJ and Wood are injured I have no issue with Ball and C Overton being in the squad, although Porter might feel a bit hard done by. Ballance is a deeply flawed batsmen but, unfortunately, he is one of the best 6 or 7 batsmen in the country IMO, certainly better than Vince and Malan.

Vince’s average this summer is awful - suggests he’s very very very fit.

He looks like Michael Vaughan when he plays the cover drive and Vaughan scored over 600 runs in the 2002-3 series; ergo, Vince is going to dominate the series.

Main issue with the "leaked" squads above is the lack of cover at opener and or No.3
And Crane?

I agree, although the Lions squad will also be in Australia. Given the squad selected I think it's inevitable that Root will be moving up to number 3.

Are they trying Ballance again as a replacement 3? The mind boggles.

Probably simply a reflection of Ballance being better than those they have tried to replace him with.

Very surprised at Vince being picked, thought he's been discarded long ago. Obviously Root responsible for Ballance's selection, hope he isn't played at 3.
Westley unlucky as they say that the pitches down under will suit his style more than the pitches here.

Vince is a strange one as is Ballance who you'd have thought would have got another go in the last test of the WI series if they were considering him.

Finn has been given almost as many chances as Ballance so not concerned he's been left out he hasn't done anything for a long time in an England shirt and while most Australian pitches should suit him I think the same of Ball and Overton, TRJ must be cursing his luck though.

Ben Stokes has a minor fracture in his right hand. But is expected to play a full part in the Ashes, according to Andrew Strauss

On Vince being selected, someone who I sort of know said that Vince's selection would cause Josh Hazelwood to have real fits of laughter. In response, I suggested that at least that presented an opportunity for him to develop a hernia issue.

Pleased to see Stokes has been retained as vice captain. I guess that will be reviewed if he was to be charged and, ultimately, convinced.
