Sad news indeed. The fact that no cause of death has been reported leads to me believe it was suicide. Does anyone know for sure?

Can't believe it, just woke up as I've got an early shift at work and discovered this on the news. Desperately sad

The guardian are reporting that Scottish police are investigating Hobden's death and it is being treated as unexplained but that there are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances.

Thoughts with his family, friends and Sussex CCC.

It sounds like he may have fallen asleep on the roof whilst celebrating New Year's Eve and fallen off. Such a random, sad accident if true.

Indeed sad news and I have no doubt it will be very hard for family and friends to come to terms with his death. I had feared the worse with no suspicious circumstances comment.

Sussex are clearly not going for the predictable this season. After a pretty bland bowling performance against Northants they are having an enthralling innings batting against the fancied Essex - opening stand of 188 dipping down to 249-5, then the first 50 from Ollie Robinson since his debut 100 against Durham last year. It should be fun all the way....

I've been a bit surprised with the standard of the XIs Essex and Northants have put out. They look like they're going to be as difficult as it gets, so perhaps settling into the season against those two isn't a bad thing. Encouraging runs from Robinson, he joined with a reputation as an allrounder and I'd been a bit worried about going in with 5 bowlers, but hopefully it will pay off in this match.

Some very early news about the 2017 fixtures. Sussex are set to return to the Saffrons, Eastbourne, where they have not played since 2000:

Sussex absolutely decimated for the home game against Kent as they are without NINE players:

Ed Joyce (Ireland)
Luke Wright (Injury)
Matt Machan (Injury)
Harry Finch (Injury)
Chris Jordan (England drinks duties - if you are not going to play him bloody release him you morons!)
Stuart Whittingham (Injured)
George Garton (Injured)
Jofra Archer (Bereavement)
Lewis Hatchett (Injured)

Our twelve man squad includes 20 year old opener Phil Salt, 20 year old middle order batsman Fynn Hudson-Prentice, 24 year old wicketkeeper-batsman Craig Cachopa and 17 year old Academy batsman Tom Haines. The first three are likely to bat in the top five against Kent. Ollie Robinson and Ajmal Shahzad are recalled to boost the bowling ranks.

I think all-rounder may be overstating his bowling somewhat, but a decent signing as a batsman.

New signing for the first 6 championship games and the one-day cup is Vernon Philander , surprisingly given the impressive seam strength within the county. He joins Magoffin, Jordan, Archer, Shahzad,Garton, Whittingham and Robinson, with Mills for T20. Should be a lot of competition - or some fed up players.

You forgot Sakande.

It does seem likely that Archer will play for England, though he was in the West Indies Under-19s.

Thanks, you're quite right and that underlines my point. I agree Archer should go further, its only a question of when. He might take over Jordan's place in the white ball teams first, until there is an obvious vacancy for him in Tests.
