Do we think it is a "bowl out" between Curran and Woakes? Personally, if wickets are similar to 2018 I doubt the wisdom/need of picking 3 seamers.
Yet the third spinner could only be Parkinson. It seems a bit of a step change to think he is ready for test cricket. Root will be asked to bowl too, but is only really good for 10-12 overs a day.

Root and (help) Denly…
At least (if fit) Leach and Bess turn it in different directions - added advantage (which is where playing at Ciderbad helps) used to the expectations of bowling on a turning pitch to win matches. Something that Ali (even at his best) struggled with.

It's always useful to have a reserve keeper. England got caught out in NZ before Christmas when Buttler picked up a knock

The thought of Foakes being a reserve keeper to the appalling Buttler is enough to make me lose all interest in this series.

If Foakes is only going to be back-up on a tour to Asia of all places, you have to wonder, what's the point?

I always thought that Foakes was called up last time because they realised the difficulties Buttler had keeping to spin (some innocuous byes in the T20 for example) - and had presumed that Buttler would play as a batsman only this time around. Worried ...

If there is no need for 3 seamers then with 3 bowlers (Denly, Root, Stokes) in the top 5 there's the possibility of playing Foakes as keeper without dropping Buttler. But then one might prefer Woakes to Broad first up, because he's likely to get more swing. Root is "keeping an open mind" about the pitches, but I agree it's a shame he can't do also that about the possibility of it being advantageous to play the best keeper.

More runs for Crawley (a ton this time) and another 20 odd for Denly.

Currently 195-3 with Root and Pope in (not sure why Stokes didn't come in at 5).

Possibly because they are intending on only playing two seamers including Stokes?

I can only assume he's now regarded as the second best batsman who can keep wicket, which means they must have lost confidence in Bairstow as Foakes did nothing with the bat last summer to press his case.

Not much Test experience, but a fair chunk of the team have played ODIs at least

Sri Lanka got its first case this week, series under threat. Might be played behind closed doors as the team are already there and playing, but surely if there's any risk, they can't just play it BCD

Sky Sports News yellow banner saying the series is now in doubt.

No other info regarding how likely this is.

Will Sri Lanka allow in any England supporters? Cant blame them if they don't.

Restrictions on people entering the country including halting all on-arrival visas, which you'd guess would affect most travelling fans

How are test match championship points allocated if this series doesn't go ahead? as if it were a nil all draw series?

Sri Lanka seems a safer place than the Uk and there won’t be any other sport on tv - let’s hope it proceeds.
