Essex County Cricket Club

Essex should get promoted this season, after being beaten to it by Worcs last year.

I'm sure Abu Dhabi in March is exactly the preparation for the county season that Essex need. I'm sure those pitches will be perfect preparation for trips to Grace Road and Swansea and facing high quality opposition like UAE academy (not to be confused with the academy from the University of East Anglia, who are probably better quality) will get the players in perfect shape for the new season.

If this trip has more to do with cricket than (a) money, (b) duty free shopping, (c) golf, and (d) someone's (Ronnie Irani? the now departed Darren Gough?) Dubai property investment I'll be amazed.

I think probably (a). Dubai seem to offer decent incentives to get top teams to play sport there. As current holders of the 20/20 floodlight cup and the Pro40 league Essex can demand top dollar.

Mind you its unseasonably warm here in the south-east of England, so they need good warm weather training when it hits a balmy 13 degrees on the first day of the CC.

I doubt anyone is really interested, as there is a WC going on and it is a game against the UAE...but, Essex made 338-8 from 50 overs! Ali Cook made 61, Ronnie Irani 58 and Andy Flower 60. James Foster only managed 5...oops.

No idea how the bowlers got on though. Sorry!

(Cook 61, Irani 58, Pettini 95, Andy Flower 60, Grant Flower 14, Foster 5, Middlebrook 1, Tudor 8, Phillips 17 not out, Westfield 1 not out, Palladino dnb)

UAE/UAE Academy 167-8 off 50 overs

(Tudor 0-20 off 8 overs, Palladino 0-39 off 8 overs, Westfield 2-25 off 8 overs, Phillips 1-9 off 6 overs, Middlebrook 1-26 off 10 overs, Grant Flower 1-23 off 6 overs, Cook 2-12 off 4 overs)

Cooky should be in the West Indies.......

Not sure why you missed out Pettini EC, but good to see him top scoring.

He should be there, yes! Surely he's better than Ed Joyce...?

Pettini's name wasn't there when I checked!

Cooky stepping up to captain the side in their latest game. Not sure the quality of the oppo is up to much at all, particularly their batting:

Scorecard

Essex v Fly Emirates at Sharjah Cricket Stadium (2pm start local time, 10am BST).

Essex won the toss and elected to bat

Essex 343-5 off 45 overs

(Cook 41, Chopra 100, Foster 103, Middlebrook 25, Grant Flower 3, Phillips 33 not out, Westley 15 not out)

Fly Emirates 88 all out off 24.4 overs

(Palladino 1-32 off 5 overs, Westfield 1-10 off 4 overs, Napier 4-16 off 7 overs, Phillips 2-15 off 5 overs, Grant Flower 1-10 off 2.4 overs, Middlebrook 0-2 off 1 over)

Essex won by 255 runs

Ohh Cooky was obviously too shocked at having the captaincy thieved off him, that he only managed a score of five. This is probably what has happened to Straussy...

Hmmm beating Sussex is pretty good, do you know who turned out for them?

And we beat them without Ronnie who scored 100's against them for fun last year.

No, the pieman cometh not. Overseas players are Danish Kaneira for the whole season, and Andre Nel and Andy Bichel sharing the second berth.

Also we have Andy FLower on a british passport, Grant Flower on a Kolpak and RTD on a EU passport.
