Spotted this on Cricinfo. He's rather , isn't he?

"It's a good German name and sounds like someone who lives high up in the mountains so he doesn't have enough oxygen and that makes him crazy."

Andre Nel explains his on-pitch alter ego, named Gunther.

Very envious of you guys going to the County Ground on a regular basis. Have yet to really make the long walk (ten mins) along the river to new writtle street but am hoping to do so in the next month to catch some cricket during the weekend. Bison, I didn't know you were now working in Chelmsford. I'm sure you've been, but there is an excellent pub near the ground called the Queens Head - does a lovely range of real ales.

As for the Cricket, Essex's defeat to Nottinghamshire was pretty bad. Still not as bad as a couple of years ago when Essex scored 600 against Glamorgan and still lost.

Edit: I forgot about Jefferson, not sure where he'll fit. Hopefully instead of Gallian, but no doubt Shafayat will be axed just like Patel
Excuse my rounding up its 49.70

That's not at al bad for a 22yo - he doesn't even bat at the Oval or Taunton! And if you've got an English 22yo averaging 49.70 who can't get in the team if you get another overseas batsmen in, you don't sign that extra overseas batsman.

Sorry, I meant an English batsman averaging 49.70. We've probably enough bowlers averaging that.

I think Fleming and Hussey have both been committed to Notts for this season for a while though. And this, for me, is the first season where Samit has really looked like fulfilling his potential. I agree it's a shame he's been dropped though. And from Mick Newell's comments the other day he's understandably not at all happy about it.

Thought I'd try zxb's link out...

(He turned around, as the bowler had just begun his run up! )

EDIT: Now...if only it was bigger.

In which case its poor foresight. Its not as if Samit Patel has sprung from nowhere - his talent has been known for a long time. He should have been given the opportunity to fulfil that talent, even before he was averaging 49.70.

True. I'm actually quite surprised Shafayat came back knowing what Newell's like, he does tend to favour experience. If Patel had played more games than Will Smith or David Alleyne (who played as a specialist even before Read was called up for England) last season I don't think we'd be in division 2 this year.

Clearly in the wrong thread as this is a Notts matter rather than an Essex one, but Itihnk that is a very shortsighted view. i believe a coach/manager who gives yuoth a chacne will be given greater latitude than one who relies on experience.

Love you zxb!

A few of my friends were being very cruel and said that they couldn't tell it was him and how it looked more like Geraint Jones... I wasn't impressed.

You're quite right - and we actually do have a Notts thread now so I've no excuse...

Maybe another TMS/24/7 meet up? I could certainly be tempted to Chelmsford on a Saturday by the prospect of a lovely range of real ales...

My point was that it's not as if they needed to drop Patel to make space for Fleming when Wagh was clearly the player who should have gone. If Fleming is there he should play, after all neither he or Wagh will ever play for England, but Fleming is clearly the better player.

We're screwed now aren't we? Gonna be at least two years before we challenge in division two again, assuming we can still muster a team then...

FYI - Essex had agreed a deal to borrow Lee Daggett off my lot, Warwickshire, for three weeks earlier in the season. Then neil Carter got injured and we called it off.

Very interesting. Didn't know that. The loan system has been underused IMHO.

We used it to get Thorneycroft a couple of seasons back, but then never played him because he wasn't any good. Perhaps if Jefferson doesn't manage to break into a successful Notts batting line up once he's fit.....
