What do Essex fans think of the Saggers loan? Is there any injury jinx for bowlers over there?

Saggers loan? Do you have a link?

About time too. We can now field 9 bowers next game.

Sad to hear Ronnie ***** is retiring at the end of the season. No wonder he has been looking glum recently.

Can't understand why the captain's surname is not acceptable.

Been coming for a while, and obvious with Irani not being fit for the 4 day game. Interesting that Pettini seems to be heading for the captaincy. Last year it looked as though Foster was being looked at for that role.

Irani's name being swear filtered is obviosuly the mods trying, and failing, to be funny. Can they stop it and grow up please? There seem to be enough problems recently without ****ing people off further.

I would be very surprised if Foster didn't get it. The side is starting to look very young without Andy Flower and soon ***** not in the team.

Very young, and very short of batting. Pettini has captained all the games where Irani has been missing this season. Foster has player all but one of those (where Pettini kept wicket too!). I guess the thinking is that Pettini won't get called up to represent England, so is a steady, long term presence.

Pettini is also not a keeper and the general opinion is that keepers are not ideal captains for the same reason (or one of the reasons) that Flintoff was not an ideal captain. All rounders simply have too much work to do already.

By the way, I find the Irani joke modestly amusing, mainly because of the reaction. Sorry NB.

He is a keeper, and keeps for Essex when Foster is not fit or available.

Okay, point taken. He's not the first choice keeper though. If Foster plays, he keeps. Therefore if keeping affects captaincy, it's going to have far more of an effect on Foster's captaincy than Pettini's, unless Foster is out with a long term injury, in which case he's not going to be much cop as a captain anyway.

You are of course correct. Foster's possible runs with the loss of Irani and Flower are also increasingly important, and he could do without having to think about the captaincy aswell.

Seems to be official that our captian, Ronnie Irani IS retiring due to his knees.
Shame.

Will he play a last competitive game?

He's hoping to play all the one day games this season, and some championship games, but I can't really see the latter happening. He's given excellent service to Essex, and has really improved his batting after being told he can't bowl anymore. He has also kept going after several operations on his knee.

He was offered a contract by the club for 2008 and 2009, but turned them down as he knew he wasn't up to it.

Well thanks for everything Ronnie. Saw him play against my Home town (Upminster) in a charity game, smashed some mighty sixes out of the park, whilst wearing pink boots.

Seemed a very nice guy.

Chopra & Bopara both have their 50's.

Fair play to Ronnie, he has served the county well and will be a tough act to follow. Looks like a few seasons of real rebuilding now. Let's hope that Pettini is up to the challenge (along with Fozzie B).

Now Im confused! How can retirement mean playing in all the one day games this season, and some championship games??!!!

He is retiring at the end of the season and between now and then will play in some CC games and all the one day games.
