Will Nelson play? I would say Northants strongest XI now is:

Peters
A Crook
Wakely
Sales
White
Wessels
O'Brien (+)
Klusener
Boje (c)
S Crook
Brown / Panesar

Two seamers: Klusener, S Crook

Two spinners: Boje, Brown plus White and Wakeley as backup

With Browning, Howgego, Logan, Lucas, Nelson, White and Wigley as backup.

I still don't see Nelson as being in the first choice XI. The original squad was very heavy on all rounders, with Klusener, VDW, Boje, Hall and Steve Crook. I think Nelson is now in a good position as the first reserve if there's an injury to Klusener or Crook. He might even come in for Boje instead of Graeme Whie, depending on the pitch.

Can't see Boje coming in at 9; more like 4 or 5. Surely Nelson could play ahead of one of the keepers, or one of the relatively useless trio of Peters, A Crook or R White?

Good point about Boje's position. He was coming in number 5 last season.

Peters didn't do too badly last season (three centuries, althoug looking at it now his average was below both the Whites). Rob White has had plenty of chances and failed to cement his place. By the end of the season I would expect one of him, O'Brien and Wessels to have fallen out of the reckoning.

(What's going to happen when Sales is on England duty? )

We'll be too busy having snowball fights in hell to worry about Northants?

I'm ignoring the above comment.
Johann Louw's going to be back for the season as a replacement for one or other of the ICL heroes who sacrificed their season to try to shaft the BCCI. This is good news, because he was a good bowler when he was here before, especially in the one day stuff. I'm a bit surprised, though because he left under a cloud, whne he was released form his contract, saying that he wanted to go back to SA, and wasn't going to play in England. About a week later he signed a contract with Middlesex. Still, this is his opportunity to make up for it by taking lots and lots of wickets. Please?

What about loaning a bowler in? Depending on international call ups both Lancashire and Durham may possibly have bowlers who are surplus to requirement.

he'll be coming in after his best season in SA domestic cricket in a long time so if he can keep that up then you have a bit of a Gem once again.

Northants beat Derbyshire in the warm up game yesterday.
Derbyshire 254/7 (Rogers 74, Sadler 35, Telo 63, Smith 23; Wigley 10-?-47-2, A Crook 10-?-43-2)

Northants 257/8 (49.5 overs) (Wessels 68, R White 66*, Wakely 61; Doshi 3/40, Clarke 2/26, Needham 2/47) Lucas and Bud Bailey also got a wicket each.

Match reports are here and here.

Interesting that in the Hants match O'Brien kept and opened the batting with Wessels in the middle order, but in this game it was the other way round.

Squad for the Warks game.

Boje replaces O'Brien, Lucas is in for Bud Bailey, and Monty instead of Jason Brown. A Crook as 12th man. No great surprises here, and the extra bowler will be helpful.

Wakely's got a fifty against the students. Hopefully that's a sign of improving form rather than poor bowlers.

Northants playing a very different team for this game- Nelson and Graeme White get a game, and Jason Brown is captain in the absence of Boje and Sales. Good to see Steven Crook is back, and batting number 5!

Edit: No, Crook's batting at 6. Usual service on Cricinfo.

Scorecards look screwed for this game. The only thing that's sure is that Wakely's on 99*

Hundred now.

Looks like two separate bowlers have broken down mid-over.

Overs are complete now, must have been another mistake. 274-6 now

Well, Wessels finally has a hundred, he hasn't been able to buy any runs this season and last season he was pretty *****. Hopefully this will spur him on, even though it's only against UCCE bowlers.

Who'd have thought that Steven Crook was a fugitive?

Indeed they didn't seem to bad. There is obviously something quite musical about Northants players. Crook, Swann and Ambrose have all played for you and are in bands.

Fantastic news as David Sales signs a new 4 year contract.

Good for you.

Bad for me as he was the only one of our targets that excited me.
