Arafat being on loan at Somerset, as opposed to Griffiths on loan to Hampshire.
You'd think they would just recall him, rather than keep signing new players
And you can add:
Craig Young on loan from Ireland earlier in the year.
Ryan Stevenson from Devon
Ervine - Zimbabwe
even Tomlinson & Wood from Hampshire

In which case Surrey (or anyone else who wanted him for that matter) wouldn't need to blow Durham out of the water to prise him away, simply to offer him similar terms to what he was already on.

Although you say this in jest you are not far wrong. the county season is not yet over already the following players are leaving at the end of the season...

Muchall (leaving to go into teaching)
Mustard (Currently on loan to Gloucestershire)
Stoneman (joining Surrey)
MacLeod (Released)
Harrison (unconfirmed at this stage)

Possible departures...

Mark Wood
Keaton Jennings
Scott Borthwick

Many of these players can earn more at other counties as Durham have to deal with their debt. The club are relying on local lads playing just as much for the love of the club as the money.

I wouldn't think Wood will be leaving. He has a central contract and will hardly see much of Durham.

Discussion about Durham on CWOTV this morning suggesting that as Durham are paying the cost of the Riverside ground, a requirement of gaining first class status, and because of their record of producing England players, the ECB should pay off their debts.

There's no guarantee he'll get another one though. I didn't think he'd be going but the buzz seems to be he'll be on his way at the end of the season.

Yes and no.

It is true that a condition of becoming a first class county was to have an international standard ground. It is also true that a few years ago the ground had to make further improvements (as did all the test grounds) to host international matches. This happened just before the credit crunch. Northern Rock were the club's major sponsor at the time.

What is not the fault of the ECB is the amount of money Durham were paying their players. There were some crazy salaries being paid just a few years ago for players like Harmy (who was no longer getting a central contract), Plunkett, Davies & Blackwell. On top of that there were justified big earners such as Benkenstein & Collingwood.

The recent SL test cost 923,000 and the reason they paid this daft amount was that it came as part of the Ashes package. The ECB have taken two future ODIs off the club.

So the ECB do need to take some of the responsibility but it's not entirely their fault. Also if they bail one county out just like that then they would have to do it for others. It also sends out the wrong signals - "Hey if we get into debt it doesn't matter as the ECB will bail us out".

On the other side of the fence though the ECB have a massive surplus of cash and it wouldn't hurt for them to put more back into the counties.

The argument was that all counties should be underwritten by the ECB. Didn't they bail out Northants?

Durham's contributions to the national game somewhat greater.

I presume he is off to the independent sector rather than to train to work in the state sector. There seem to be plenty of ex pros working in that sector.

Hopefully they can keep Wood even if he loses his central contract.

Why are you releasing MacLeod? Also, when Wood was asked about his future when commentating he never gave much of a response.

Lancs release Reece, Edwards and Griffiths.

I don't know why they didn't release Buck and Brown as well.
