I don't know why they didn't release Buck and Brown as well.
Brown is contracted to 2018, signed a 3 year deal on the back of 2015 form at the top of the order, and was prompted dropped down the order for Tom Smith.

Reece and Griffiths are talented ex-Academy local players.

Lancs would do better to start asking questions about what is going wrong post Academy. Why do so many talented cricketers fail at 2nd XI level not putting pressure on established stars. What are the coaches doing at that level? The likes of Anderson and Hameed go straight through but it is so hard for so many others to break that glass ceiling at 2nd XI level.

Reece played for Leeds UCCE so would have been under their coaching as well.

We haven't produced an England player since 2003 since you can't count Mahmood really.

If we are releasing three is that because there is some talent in the academy they want to blood instead?

So .... perhaps the Leeds UCCE coaches can take credit for his first season in the Lancs first team (average 55, 8 fifties) after that (average 17, 2 fifties) it would have been Yates, Chilton, Giles and Chapple.

the scholarship players (Jones and Lamb) can hardly get a game in the seconds this year - let alone the academy players, as the 2nds also have to try and get the "1st team" players back into form.

Look at this http://www.lccc.co.uk/cricket/news/2...ershire-clash/ squad named for the last seconds trophy game. The priority was to play 1st team players. Next on the rank Jones and Lamb couldn't get into the squad.

This year academy players have started 3 seconds' championship matches (Turner twice and Bohannon once). Because the side is full of contracted players trying to find form.

Unlike other counties the Lancs Academy don't have a full fixture list, the odd game they do play, the Lancs website (or play-cricket) can't provide a scorecard for.

It is also true that a few years ago the ground had to make further improvements (as did all the test grounds) to host international matches. This happened just before the credit crunch. Northern Rock were the club's major sponsor at the time.

What is not the fault of the ECB is the amount of money Durham were paying their players. There were some crazy salaries being paid just a few years ago for players like Harmy (who was no longer getting a central contract), Plunkett, Davies & Blackwell. On top of that there were justified big earners such as Benkenstein & Collingwood.

The recent SL test cost 923,000 and the reason they paid this daft amount was that it came as part of the Ashes package. The ECB have taken two future ODIs off the club.

So the ECB do need to take some of the responsibility but it's not entirely their fault. Also if they bail one county out just like that then they would have to do it for others. It also sends out the wrong signals - "Hey if we get into debt it doesn't matter as the ECB will bail us out".

On the other side of the fence though the ECB have a massive surplus of cash and it wouldn't hurt for them to put more back into the counties.

Jofra Archer signed with Sussex until end of 2017.
A favourite of mine who I think should be in the WI team.

It does seem strange that there is no set format for how counties play at Academy level. In Notts the academy play in the Notts Premier League (doing quite well this year considering the ave age of the team). Other counties do something similar but some release their players to clubs on a Saturday. I also would have thought there would have thought there would be an Academy League/Competition of some description.

Yes, a most exciting prospect. But even better, it looks as if his ambitions lie with England.

Massive news for Durham:

Keaton Jennings has signed a new four year contract to remain at Durham.

Looks like promising spinner Gurman Randhawa has been released though.

That isn't really a surprise with Borthwick, Hickey and Pringle.

Anish Kapil leaving Surrey according to a local newspaper, whose reporter also lamented the fact that we'll never see "Wilson, Kapil & Batty" on a Surrey scorecard again. Same report also said Scott Borthwick is unlikely to join Surrey, with Lancs apparently the favourites to acquire his services.

That would be fantastic for Lancs if it did come about. Glad we didn't go for Stoneman but as Surrey is my second favourite team, not that happy.

Maybe Lancs could get Harinath.
Hameed, Harinath, Borthwick..... lovely

Very little news coming out of Trent Bridge (although given how this season has gone, there should be). Having such a small squad helps even those who are underperforming retain a contract.

Heard rumours of Sam Wood treading the familiar path along the A52 to Derbyshire though. Greg Smith also out of contract at the end of the season I believe.

I have heard murmurs of Steven Davies moving to Somerset from Surrey and getting back the gloves. Any truth in this?

Wood and Smith are the only ones out of contract. I expect both will get the news before too long. Smith to Leics and Wood to Derbys wouldn't be too bad a guess.

Would make sense for Surrey to lose at least one of their six keepers. Somerset are an obvious vacancy.

I presumed Wheater would go to Somerset. He's on the move this winter and went to school at Millfield.

Anish is currently playing club cricket in Staffordshire. I hope he gets another county. He was a bright, shiny prospect when he was at Worcestershire - capable of getting the ball down at a real lick. Sadly he was distracted by the prospect of the bright lights and fatter paycheck.
