I don't think Rhodes has done anything to deserve it. Tom Curran would be more deserving. Luke Wood at Notts has been good too. Craig Overton would be a good shout.

Ollie Robinson. A hundred on first-class debut, now steaming towards 50 wickets in his first season at a very good average.

Craig Overton and Tom Abell might have a shout from Somerset. Probably Craig.

Bairstow got Player of the Year and Jack Leaning Young Player of the Year. I though there was only an Young Player award. Maybe it's a new thing.

Leaning winning Young Player at the age of 112 is pretty impressive !

Let's hope he follows in the steps of the likes of Cook, Broad and Root, rather than poor old Paul Franks, who made just a solitary ODI. Does anyone here remember Dudley Owen-Thomas?

Everyone apart from Bopara from 2003-2013 is in the squad going to the UAE, with Taylor and Rashid the new additions.

Yes indeed, a victim of the old sweats culture at The Oval in those days, shunted up and down the order, sent in early when there were fast bowlers and awkward wickets, or told to go out and throw his bat late in the innings for declaration runs. He lasted a couple of years before his technique and his confidence both went to pieces and got a job in the City.

Who will be the 2017 player. I think it's done this month.

2000 - Paul Franks
2001 - Owais Shah (6)
2002 - Rikki Clarke (2)
2003 - James Anderson (128)
2004 - Ian Bell (118)
2005 - Alastair Cook (146)
2006 - Stuart Broad (108)
2007 - Adil Rashid (10)
2008 - Ravi Bopara (13)
2009 - James Taylor (7)
2010 - Steven Finn (36)
2011 - Johnny Bairstow (44)
2012 - Joe Root (59)
2013 - Ben Stokes (38)
2014 - Alex Lees
2015 - Tom Curran
2016 - Ben Duckett (4)

Porter is now too old at 24 (under 23 at 1 May) also Coad. C Overton just gets in. Davies at Lancs. No one really stands out.

Mason Crane? If he's good enough to be picked for the Test squad, he must be on the short list.

I'd go Archer if it's based solely on this season's performances.

I agree on Archer.

Would go Josh Tongue over Crane.

A third vote for Archer from me. Unless they have to be England qualified (which I don't think Archer is yet? )
