Countdown to the 2018 fixtures announcement

It's that time again.

I have now managed to complete the full set of release dates for the 2000s, filling in the missing dates for 2001, 2004 and 2006.

The 2017 fixtures were released on November 25+
The 2016 fixtures were released on December 2*
The 2015 fixtures were released on November 28
The 2014 fixtures were released on November 26
The 2013 fixtures were released on November 26
The 2012 fixtures were released on November 29
The 2011 fixtures were released on December 14
The 2010 fixtures were released on November 19
The 2009 fixtures were released on December 18
The 2008 fixtures were released on November 14
The 2007 fixtures were released on November 16
The 2006 fixtures were released on November 10
The 2005 fixtures were released on November 12
The 2004 fixtures were released on December 3
The 2003 fixtures were released on November 14
The 2002 fixtures were released on November 21
The 2001 fixtures were released on November 2
The 2000 fixtures were released on November 18

*The first matches in each competition were announced on December 1.
+The T20 Blast fixtures were released on November 24.

As this should be a very straightforward schedule to plan, with no dramatic changes anticipated, that ought to facilitate a prompt release. It's a football World Cup year, but the group games won't clash with the Blast as in some previous years.

If a post I read on Middlesex's forum is correct, a draft fixture list has already been drawn up and there could be more weekend Championship dates - maybe later in the season?

The 50 over cup final is on June 30 - effectively the same weekend as this year, which would suggest a similar structure. If it follows this year's basic layout, that would mean the opening fixtures v the MCCUs on Tuesday March 27, the opening County Championship games on Friday April 6, and the last day of the Championship on Thursday September 27. BUT late August/September may have a different look next year as the Blast finals day is not until September 15. This might facilitate some more weekend Championship cricket in early September.

One never knows, however, as sometimes they tinker with the layout anyway.

Last year the publication date was not announced officially until 3 days before the fixtures came out.

MCC XI v Essex Mar 27-30, which will be a day-night fixture played with pink Dukes balls at the Kensington Oval in Barbados.

Apart from giving a few dozen blokes a nice freebie holiday in the sunshine, I have absolutely no idea what the point of this fixture is.

First of the customary vague statements about the release date has emerged, and yes, it's as vague as they come. From Somerset's website:

Fixtures for 2018 are likely to be released in November.

The Minor Counties fixtures for 2018 are out:

Here's Cheshire's, I don't know where the complete list is.

Incidentally, I stumbled across this from 2002:

http://www.espncricinfo.com/somerset...ry/122324.html

When and why was it decided to make the draft list a state secret?

Interesting. I'd heard thar a T20 comp was not n the offing so tis good to see it come to fruition. And a proper knock out comp! Coloured clothing and white balls too which is a development.

Season extended into sep but with a later start as the ko comp had begun in april in recent years.

Fixtures out next Tuesday (T20 Blast) at 5pm and Wednesday (CC and RLODC) at 11am.

Quite why they just cant release them all at once is beyond me.

KSL fixtures also out on Tuesday at 5pm.

Because T20 is considered far more important than that luddite f-c stuff.

It's a good marketing strategy. You get twice the exposure.

Plus Championship fans should have more patience than T20 fans.

Those who prefer T20 probably won't even notice until next Spring.

Well, the 2018 fixture list hasn't disappointed me. I expected it to be even worse than last season and so it has transpired. Only one round of Championship matches between 29th June and 19th August. No Colchester game again. Kent have all their CC games at Canterbury except for one, noted 'TBC', meaning that either Beckenham or Tunbridge Wells will miss out.

On the bright side, Kent have a Championship game at Lord's for the first time in ages. And, once again, both Kent and Essex have been granted proper tour matches.

So, quite appropriate that the season kicks off on 1st April. Difficult to get enthused but I felt the same last November and ended up having the best season ever.

A fixture list that raises more questions than it answers.

Why aren't Surrey playing Somerset 13th-16th April?

Why aren't there fixtures at weekends during September? What happened to the Appointment to View? The only day a Div 1 match doesn't start is Thursday.

Surrey are playing a Uni. Guess those games have to be played at some time.

Surely the Championship takes priority over the uni games!

Well, there you go.

I don't mind personally as it'll mean two London games not clashing.

As per previous summers I shall be mostly plying the second XI and minor counties circuit again. Although I'm looking forward to a trip to the Cheltenham festival as well as a KSL game at Arundel.

For me they should be played before the CC kicks off, and I feel it's poor not to have all counties involved in the opening round of matches. I would imagine that Surrey v Cambridge fixture won't even have first class status, as presumably Cambridge will already have played their two permitted first class fixtures by then. I don't really see the point in any of the MCCU fixtures retaining first class status anymore when some of them don't.

Surrey's season is effectively two weeks shorter than this year, with the first CC match a fortnight later and the last one at the same time. Once again its a ridiculously lopsided fixture list for any Surrey supporters who are only really interested in the CC. The six CC matches at the Oval consist of the first one, the last one, back-to-back fixtures in consecutive weeks in early May, then another pair of back-to-back fixtures in late August. Absolutely nothing for over three months in the middle of the season from 14 May - 19 August. Somerset are next year's winners of the lottery to inflict Surrey's annual CC defeat at Guildford, where the hosts haven't won since the last time they were Champions in 2002.

I guess this will be the norm from now on. I don't mind a window for T20 as I feel that's the best way to play that tournament, and that's what makes the money, and I quite enjoy the post-work mid-summer format. I resent having a great big gap for the 50 overs stuff in which I have no interest at all.

On the plus side Surrey get a CC match at Scarborough in late June when the daylight hours are at their longest. We also have a day-night CC match at The Oval for the first time, against Lancs in late August. Seems a bit odd to have that game starting on a Sunday as I imagine most people would prefer to be watching from 11am-6pm on a Sunday rather than 2pm-9pm. I'll make sure I go to at least one day of that game just to see what it's like and I'll try to retain an open mind about the concept until I've actually experienced it.

I find it incredibly annoying to have no weekend Championship cricket for the final month of the season, although it's been made less practical to do that by moving T20 Finals day (and the reserve day) to the middle of September.

The ground I'd most like to visit is Colwyn Bay, the only current Championship ground I've yet to do, but it clashes with a Surrey home game so that'll have to wait for another year.

There seem to be a few more outgrounds creeping into the 50 overs fixture list including a Durham fixture at Gosforth. Blackpool and Welbeck Colliery are hosting matches again; I'm still frustrated at missing out on cricket at Blackpool when Surrey's match there was abandoned without a ball bowled in 2008. Middlesex have 50 overs fixtures at Radlett and Northwood, but all seven of their CC matches are scheduled for Lord's at the moment.
