Just read the Paul Nixon book. Highly recommended - really gives you the feel of what it is like to be a pro player, and in fact what it is like to be Paul Nixon.

An incredibly open and honest book, in which he is unafraid to say exactly what he thinks about some people. Every chapter brought a new surprise. Not least holding a seance in which the spirit of Ben Hollioake was summoned up.

Apparently Leicestershire have to cut the player wage bill by 100,000. That does not leave much cause for optimism.

Malik and Du Toit leaving so that must be around 70k+ of the wage bill. I just can't see us getting in anyone to help us with the batting though.

Is Hoggard's contract up this year? This is his third year and people don't normally sign for longer than three years at a time. I'd have thought he must be the highest earner.

Malik's one of those fast bowlers who always looked to have all the basic tools - strong physique, good action, reasonably quick - but flattered to deceive.

I think Hoggy had a contract extension to the end of 2013.

Performance of the day Ned Eckersley. Coming in at 107-6 after 25 overs, to chase down 224 with 72 off 44.

Take a bow that man.

Reminiscent of an innings I saw him play last year in the 2nd XI trophy. He's having a decent first season in the first team.

Leicestershire may not be any great shakes, but they must have a very good coaching set-up, because they continue to produce exciting prospects. Ned Eckersley is undoubtedly one, but the outstanding very young prospect is Shiv Thakor, who is still only 18, and averages 89 this season at the moment of writing. He is by all accounts a very well-organised and solid player who is proving very difficult to get out.

In addition, Josh Cobb seems to have been around for ages, as he debuted at 17, but is still just 22 and has bounced back after a bad run last year.

Write their names down. Put the paper in an envelope. Send it to Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club.

It's ok, I've already tweeted Newell.

Big Will Jefferson has had to retire from county cricket due to an ongoing hip problem.

Dixey, Du Toit, Jefferson and Malik released and expect Ali, Berrington, Boyce, Henderson, Joseph, Mommsen and Razzaq to follow them out of the club. With Collins and Wells being promoted from the Academy and Leicestershire targeting two batsman and two seamers to bring their squad back up to 20 players.

Squad next season:

Batsmen: Cobb, Jones, Sarwan, Smith, Thakor, Thornely, ?, ? [8]
Keeper: Eckersley [1]
Spinners: Collins, Naik and Sykes [3]
Seamers: Buck, Hoggard, Taylor, Wells, White, Wyatt, ?, ? [8]

Henderson's under contract until the end of 2013 and I'm pretty sure he'll be planning to see that out.

With the greatest respect to Claude Henderson he already looks like someone who has gone on a season longer than he should have done. If Leicestershire are to shave 100,000 off the wage bill then they need to get rid of Henderson or Hoggard. With Naik, Sykes and Collins they are well stocked in the spin bowling department and not so well stocked in the seam bowling department with only Buck, Taylor, Wells, White and Wyatt.

I do agree, but looks like hands tied there - they either have to pay them off (costly) or let them play their contracts out (probably only slightly more costly but they get their services for 2013 as opposed to getting nothing in return for a pay off).

By all accounts Hoggy is on a very decent salary indeed (which you would expect).

Leicestershire don't have much to work with here.

I would keep Joseph (who can be very effective on early season wickets) and Boyce (who provides much-needed glue at 5 or 6) - I don't suppose either cost so much.

It's not so adventurous but they have to operate within their means. Keep who are functioning okay and look to bring on the youngsters.

Does anyone know if Grace Road is a decent drainer? I'm aware that a new system was installed around the turn of the century but this alone doesn't tell me much. I'm musing over taking a trip up there on Tuesday - the forecast for that day looks fair but I'm worried about the overnight downpours...don't want to spend a sizeable amount of travelling dosh and a priceless day's leave just for the umpires to faff about with "damp run ups" for two or three hours.

Make Henderson a coach and release Joseph and Boyce as neither up to the mar. Sign an opening batsman, middle order batsman, all-rounder and a seamer.
