As for losing your opening batsmen and opening bowler now you know how Sussex fans feel with Montgomerie having retired and Rana having signed for Yorkshire as their overseas player.
Diva did not want this though because he would have had to have given up palying for Tassie, i think we tried it a year or two back.

This is probably what is making him uneasy about returning to Durham. They want him AND Chanders but of course the one overseas player rule comes into force next season. To get round it Diva would have to become a passport player and therefore would become an overseas player in Oz.

From what I gather he'd earn a lot more money playing for Durham but of course he would have to consider his family in all this.

I suspect he won't return

Looking at the Future Tours Programme, you'd only have Chanderpaul in July and August, assuming he's rested from those ODIs against Bermuda and Canada. Can't see the point myself

I hope we are going to sign one or two new players before the new season. This has been our best season by far but we don't want to let the grass grow under our feet. We need a decent bowler to replace Ottis.

You'll need a more than decent bowler to replace him. He was the revelation of the season.

Very true. Problem is there are no good bowlers around. Certainly not any who are out of contract.

Surely you'll just give Onions and Davies more of a go?

It's not as if Durham is that short of fast bowlers. If Harmison drops out of the test reckoning, he could demolish county batting attacks like Andrew Caddick has done for years, only with tracks that really offer him some help.

Durham have plenty of bowling resources but they seem to get injured a lot. Davies' problems are well known and we lost Thorp for most of last season and Plunkett's back is always a bit suspect, even after changing his action.

Durham's seam attack:

Harmison
Plunkett
Onions
Davies
Thorp
Killeen
Evans
Gidman

That should be more than sufficient!

I think ensuring Di Venuto and Chanderpaul return is more pressing. Signing a quality spinner wouldn't go amiss as neither Wiseman or Bresse convince me.

Harmison - Possible England duty
Plunkett - Possible England duty
Onions - Gets wickets but not economical enough
Davies - Injury prone
Thorp - Started to do the biz for Durham before injury wrecked last season
Killeen - Good workhorse but age is not on his side. More a one day bowler
Evans - Not yet given a good run to see how he does
Gidman - Ditto

On paper it is a decent battery of pace bowling but take away players who are injured or on England duty and we could be a bit light. Thats why I would prefer one more signing.

For 3 years.
They say as a Kolpak but I think he is more an EU player.

They've also arranged Neil McKenzie as cover for when Chanderpaul is away, with Albie Morkel coming in for 20/20

They are playing Bermuda? What is the point in that? Canada I guess at least have 0.1% chance of possibly becoming an international force in cricket but Bermuda have about as much chance of becoming one as I have winning the Monaco Grand Prix riding a donkey with no legs

Di Venuto is an excellent signing and one of the more worthy Kolpakkers

Interesting that DiVo has retired from domestic Australian cricket as this had a bearing on whether he played as an overseas or passport player.

Looks like the offer we made him was too good to turn down. As for the temporary overseas signings, it appears Dale Benkenstein has been busy.
