Thank you Rey. What great news. Things usually happen in 3s. Contract for Anderson, picked for SL squad and now contract for Clare.

Well they said there were 5,000 people at Lords. It didn't look like it but I am sure Clare has never played in front of more than 500 and to be on tv. Pity Katich is leaving. Who is likely to be captain next season?

Morris at Edgbaston last week, Loudon out of contract and career stalled since he moved to Warwickshire, Derbyshire need middle order batsmen (and if they bowl spin all the better to make up for the loss of Botha). Loudon has captaincy experience (though at junior level) and Derbyshire need a captain. Could be a move that benefits everyone.

Birch (done very little apart from scoring century against weak opposition)
Birt (poor season as overseas player for Derbyshire)
Borrington (failed to make single 1XI appearence this year)
Cusden (hardly played for 1XI)
Dighton (hardly set the world alight in his short spell with Derbyshire)
Harvey (been unable to play for 1XI because of registration problems)
Hodgkinson (bowled 10 overs in one CC match which went for 75)
Hughes (who hasn't even appeared for 1XI despite 14 1XI debutants)
Hunter (been injured most of this season)
Klokker (scored century in one match not seen in 1XI since)
Taylor (likely to be granted his wish to leave)
Weston (very poor season for Derbyshire with the bat)
Whitely (who hasn't even appeared for 1XI despite 14 1XI debutants)

Of the other 28 players there are 13 players which Derbyshire could afford to release without lose much in the way in terms of quality. 4 of the remaining 15 players who are not already on the staff (Clare, Patel, Poynton and Saffell) should be offered contracts for next season.

Derbyshire need 4 new batsmen, a batting all-rounder, spinner and a captain to take the squad up to 21.
I think Derbyshire face an almost perennial scenario which anyone who supports an ever-struggling lower level football club will know only too well. They can't possibly afford to entice the better players, so the only option is to take ones that no-one else wants. And such players are in that situation for a reason!

It's a bit like going on eBay to buy stuff for your favourite hobby and having £5 to spend against others armed with £100. In the end you buy a couple of cheap items that no-one is bidding on, so at least you have something.

Players such as France, Spendlove, Gray, Dumelow, Havell, Birch, Cusden and Hodgkinson all fall into this bracket - all good honest keen cricketers and true, I'm sure, and a cut above a club level, but they'd have never got a deal at any other county. But the club has to turn out a side.

There's the youngsters, but it's no good throwing them to the lions if they're not ready. However, one can't help but feel that Derbyshire have been maybe a little over cautious in this area - twice giving Borrington "it's the last match of the season so you can have a go now" routine means two years have passed for two appearances.

The answer has to be in the academy, which needs to turn out a core of players who come up to the mark so Derbyshire can go forwards.

well the season is over finally.

The championship we did ok to be honest, the batting was a big let down and Travis Birts lack of interest and the Chris Taylor fiasco were factors behind that. There were games though that we should have won such as Glamorgan and one of the Gloucestershire games where we were well on top but failed to force a result. We weren't far off making a promotion push though which at least shows signs of encouragement. The championship bowling was at the best i've seen it for years with 3 bowlers taking over 50 wickets, Kevin Dean chipping in well when he was first, Jon Clare looking a good find and if we can get Boyd Rankin back bowling confidently over a long period of time then the bowling looks as good as most in this league although maybe another spinner with experience would be nice. Steve Stubbings had his poorest year for a while but i'm going to but that down to Katitch not having faith in him and him being swapped around the order, Stubbo is definetly a confidence player.

As for one day cricket though it needs a complete rethink, 3 wins all year is frankly shocking. The bowling is generally to lose with Wagg particularly bowling far to many four balls for that form of the game and we lack a couple of control bowlers when Dean is not fit. The batting here was again pretty much awful with a lot of the time players looking clueless as to how to apply themselves and pace an innings, i've never seen so many innings just fall away in the middle after good starts. Losing Ian Harvey was particularly awful as the whole balance just went. Greg Smith was probably our best one day player and he improved in all three fields so we can't complain at him.

Next year Morris needs to select an influencial captain because as good of a player Katitch was he never got the same respect or got the same battle out of the players that Welch did, (who was probably the biggest loss of the whole season) however there is no player who could do that job in the squad so Morris will need to use his contacts and bring someone in. The Overseas player needs to be a batsmen however i wouldn't give them the captaincy.

Overall its not been great but there have been positives and losing you most experienced and influencial player a month before the season was never going to help and then add to thst losing Ian Harvey. Welch needs to be given a coaching role with Morris concentrating on other matters and hopefully the new regime will start to take shape.

Finally were actually seeing youngsters with a bit of promise coming through in Redfern, Borrington, Clare, Wagg, Needham and one or two others. Its been a year of changes and a bit of a right of but hopefully we'll get a few guys in and our luck won't be as tough as last year. Ending with a moan though i hope the board is feeling very pleased with our thier wonderful treatment of Michael Di Venuto.....

Make that 16 players as Borrington has signed a new two year contract. The bit about Derbyshire needing 4 batsmen, batting all-rounder, spinner and captain still applies though!

I think we have to be realistic though, we aren't going to attract that many players.

One of those required batsmen will be taken up up by an Overseas player, hopefully the captaincy will be used to get another batter in. After that Moris needs to use his contacts to somehow get us another batsmen, that all rounder and a spinner with experience.

Like i mentioned all plans last year went balls up with Welch having to call time and the whole Harvey issue, Welch particularly because he did have that much of an effect on the side and players around him.

Borrington is not going to be available for lots of games because he has a few years left at uni.

That wouldn't win a raffle in a pub quiz let along win a county cricket match! Surely Kevin Dean must make the starting XI!

Derbyshire may have lost seven players (Katich, Welch, Birt, Ballance, Adnan, Taylor and Cusden) but I don't think Birch, Birt, Dighton, Harvey, Hodgkinson, Hughes, Hunter, Klokker, Weston or Whitely are good enough either!

Dighton i think is good enough, of the few times i saw him last year he certainly he had a lot of class about him and i doubt we'll get anybody better. Given time to get used to the wicket then he might find his feet, it can take Australians a while to adapt over here.

I wouldn't take Harvey as the overseas, that position needs to be taking by a top order batsmen but there are not plenty available with the International calender rather packed over this season.

Kevin Dean is a quality bowler but you can't rely on him being fit for a whole season, he has also become more of a control bowler because injuries have taken it out of him.

so basically we have:

Stubbings
Dighton???
An Overseas plater
The Captain
Another batsmen...
Smith
Pipe
Wagg
Needham
Dean/Clare
Lungely

then you have Borrington and Redfern when available, Klokker, Saffel, Wayne White, Weston and Birch making up the numbers.
