The problem is that he's under contract for Kent for another 2 years, he can't just stop playing. I know it's pretty much what VVJ did but Mclaren likes Kent, he's done well there and improved loads while there, he doesn't want to screw them over.
The proposal was that once he established himself with SA, he would, if successful get an IPL contract so would not suffer financially. Arthur thought it was a formality that Kent would release him. Kent not coming to the party is affecting a player's international ambitions though. I wonder if this situation will make players think twice. With Paul Harris and Vaughn V. getting out of their Kolpak agreements maybe players thought it was never going to be a stumbling block if SA came calling. What is happening to Bond regarding the ICL is a disgrace.

The myth of year round sunshine and the belief that the grass is greener? Might have been true 20/30 years ago. Isn't now.

Too right. They've invested a lot of money in him and took him on as a long term prospect. If he walks out on them he risks losing very stable, well remunerated employment, especially in the circumstances that his international career does not blossom.

According to Gerard Majola of CSA, McLaren has his heart set on playing for England.

In a few years time rather than playing for his own country now. I guess the saying 'I have always dreamed of playing for my country' could be 'I have always dreamed of a big bank balance'.

Why are Kent not producing any youngsters? Looking at their squad THIRTEEN or their seventeen players are CAPPED! Joseph took 50 wickets last season. Only Blake, Dixey and Northeast could be classified as player out of the first team picture who are youngsters.

What about the Academy players? They have just announced their Academy intake for 2009 which includes:

Adam Ball 15 LF RHB England U15
Daniel Bell-Drummond 15 RHB RM England U15 Millfield School
Sam Billings 17 RHB WK England U17
Matt Coles 18 RF LHB
Fabian Cowdrey 15 SLA RHB England U15
James Goodman 17 RHB RM England U19
Chris Paisley 16 LHB OB England U16
Dan Stickels 17 LHB

Off-spinner Charlie Hemphrey (19) was a regular for Kent 2XI last season.

Why don't Kent play them rather than playing failed players from other counties or club cricketers instead?

What chances of seeing a side something close to this next season?

Stickels, Ball, Northeast, Goodman, Hemphrey, Paisley, Cowdrey, Bell-Drummond, Blake, Dixey (+), Billings (+), Coles

It was only a very few years ago that Kent were regularly releasing good young, locally produced players (mainly batsmen) because there wasn't a place for them in the side. Now they have a side of all sorts, mainly Kolpaks and flag of convenience cricketers and the younger players don't seem to be coming through. Dexter's going but he was a South African.

I think James Beeny (22) who finished 14th in SEC averages with 542 runs @ 49.27 for Sussex 2XI was one of them!

I think 6 out of 8 Academy players are batsmen.

I see Fabian Cowdrey is a lefty bowler.

There's been no activity on this thread for a few months, where are you Kent fans???

It's a shame how so many local lads are being forced out of the Kent set up - hopefully some will be able to stake a claim now that we're in division 2. Sam Northeast has batted well on the England u-19s South african tour (329 runs @ 36.54 with 3 fifties) however had a tendency to get out when set.

Another thing to consider is that with Rob Key and MVJ both bidding for IPL contracts, maybe blooding youngsters will be forced upon Graham Ford when the new season starts....

Unfortunately there has never been a strong Kent presence on this site. It's why I used to do most of my county posting elsewhere.

One local lad, James Hockley, who was forced out is now being welcomed back into the fold. I hope he makes the most of it as he has some talent.

Kent's loss is England's gain. He's far less likely to play as much for Australia than he would have for Kent.

What's this guy Henry Jones, who has just picked up three quick wickets for Loughborough UCCE v Leicestershire, like?
