Anyone know what has happened to Blowers? Not that I'm his biggest fan but he seems to be on TMS less and less. Is this down to the new producer?

Correct, although they haven't quite scaled the same heights as Andrew McKenna of Talksport...

I'm so glad that TMS has the winter rights back again. Having to listen to Robin Jackman et al was very painful!

I thought TMS did have the winter rights. Sure I heard the Ashes on there.

Think MM meant back from Talksport, which was a while ago - they definitely covered the 2004/05 SA series. Don't remember it being too bad, but I wasn't as avid a fan then as I am now.

Jack Bannister, Chris Cowdrey, Mark Nicholas and a drunk Robin Jackman.

We need a 'shudder' smiley.

In addition, they had the trophies and medals dot com advert, which still upsets me now and again all this time later. Those were bad times.

They were pretty poor but it was the the Trophies and Medals.com advert which I was most pleased to hear the last of. It was more than enough to send even the most saintly and mild-mannered individuals who had been heavily sedated incandescent with rage.

I don't remember that advert. Must have blocked it out. Lucky me.

When it comes to conservatism, cricket-lovers can teach football fans a thing or two. Mitchell was 21 when she got her first taste of cricket broadcasting, making coffee for Richie Benaud as a runner for TV production company Sunset + Vine. Now 27, she has worked for the BBC Asian Network and covered countless county games for Radio Five Live. But her big break came in March - albeit in unfortunate circumstances - when she was the only BBC representative on the island of Jamaica at the time of Bob Woolmer's tragic death..... As a career broadcaster who will be anchoring the coverage alongside Jonathan Agnew, Mitchell comes from a different category altogether. And about time too.
Once again Michael Henderson demonstrates that he isn't keeping up with what's happening in the cricketing world, isn't familiar with the work of his fellow Telegraph columnists, and obviously has never heard of Alison Mitchell.

Quote:
According to a pal of mine, Twenty20 cricket "is like watching children's television". It was no surprise, therefore, that Five Live's coverage of the finals at Edgbaston last weekend sounded like children's radio. All that was missing was jelly and ice cream, lashings of ginger beer, and Tony Blackburn's wretched dog: "Woof, woof!" "Thank you, Arnold". The culprits will expect to be named and shamed, so step forward Phil Williams, Alison Mitchell and Arlo White. We may not hear again from Williams and Mitchell, unless Andy Pandy is looking for company, but one hears that White is highly regarded within Radio Best Mate's sports department. There are even suggestions on the qt that he may soon become a permanent member of the Test Match Special team.

To be fair to the lad, White has some talent as a presenter. But, where cricket is concerned, TMS should be looking elsewhere. There is a world of difference in tone and mood between Norwich against Coventry and a Test match, and White does not appear to understand it. His grasp of cricket is shaky, and TMS prides itself on being rooted in the game. Mistakes can be forgiven; ignorance cannot. We stick-in-the-muds are not against change, so long as it is organic. But if White is promoted to regular TMS duty then the demotic lobby will have won a victory without firing a shot. In time, the sporting world's most cherished radio programme will become just another show, which is what some folk within the BBC want it to be.
I didn't hear the Twenty20 commentary, but imagine that the Beeb wanted it to be a bit more "accessible" than the usual TMS stuff, although why that should be I have no idea. The game is watched by genuine cricket lovers (one or two 247 members excepted) as well as newcomers. But Alison Mitchell is an intelligent, proven cricket journalist and I wish her well tomorrow. Pity that Henderson will not be listneing. He's spot on about Arlo White though.

I didnt speak to him after that.

I love Holding's voice and his knowledge of the game, especially bowling techniques is insightful and adds something to the commentary. Lloyd can be funny at times but I find him repetitive now after listening to him for years. Willis looks at times as if he's a tad dazed.

I thought it was Hell in there already. Still, I can see how the advert that will not again be named by me might have made things worse.

Alison Mitchell only had a short stint in the comm box, and she seemed okay...wasn't paying attention that much. Dougie Brown though is a consummate presenter, for an ex-player

Reading through the thread there's obviously a few candidates, but for my money there is no commentator worse than Arun Lal. I accept that people might struggle at times speaking a second language, but Lal's bumbling incompetence is beyond a joke. I don't know whether he needs new glasses but he fails to see what the rest of the viewing public can on a regular basis. He was so bad at the start of the Indian innings today I turned the sound down. Suggesting Brett Lee was on a hat-trick when one of the previous wickets to fall was a run out was simply par for the course for a man who rarely, if ever gets it right.

Arun Lal's biggest problem is he speaks like a fan. Most commentators try to maintain objectivity but it seems utterly beyond Arun Lal to do so.

And he has made a number of gaffes, it is true. More than once I've heard him scream about that brilliant stroke...that, er, landed in a fielder's hands and sent the batsmen back to the pavilion. Or the great four that a batsman hit...which, um, actually went for just a single.
