Bowling at leg stump with no fielders in ring on legside to number 9. Scenes.

Really exciting game in the end, game changed with the slightest of touches from Woakes to run out Santner. |

Centuries win matches, we're told.
Williamson looks disconsolate. Strange, you'd think he wouldn't care about this meaningless match.

England won that in spite of Morgan’s captaincy. At 103-6 the game was virtually up but he just gave the batsman easy singles with defensive fields and took his slip out when one more wicket would have killed the game.

I agreed with his bowling changes but his fields were pretty awful.

Brilliant from woakes. Possibly England's most underrated player for years.

Yes, he bowled well. For the first time in absolutely ages England have two viable options at the death. Curran’s figures weren’t great but he is incredibly promising in one day cricket.

He's certainly come good in limited overs cricket while progressing nowhere in Tests. Not what some on here thought would be how his international career would pan out.

Sounded like a great game on a dodgy pitch. Well done England.

I agree he hadn’t really progressed in test cricket but he has only just turned 29 so he should be at his peak over the next 3 years. I’d be tempted to give him the new ball for the NZ tests.

Looking forward to someone unpicking five for 70 off 20 overs from our spin bowlers.
Woakes is either brilliant or pretty lame in tests. |

Pfft. Dodgy pitch my arse. About time there was something in these hit-fests for the bowlers to work with. If you end up with two close scores over 200, there's nothing wrong with it.
But bloody hell that Kiwi middle order is a pile of ***** if Williamson or Taylor is missing.

Pretty much every cricket team wants to beat England in any form of cricket. Post-colonial ennui or sommat.

Others would say the ball clearly hit the ground. Roy's reaction suggested it wasn't a clean catch.

I think the problem is they have to give a soft signal. There's no way the umpire could see it, and as Roy didn't really claim the catch, they had to give the benefit of the doubt to the batsman. The third umpire then didn't really have enough certainty to overturn the decision. If they didn't have to give a soft signal and just sent it upstairs like they used to, it may have been out.

You'd think so. Even if the fielder gets it wrong sometimes, the official adjudication system seems to get it wrong routinely, and is now a bad joke. The players should take the matter into their own hands: the batsman should ask the fielder, and then walk if he says he thinks he caught it.
