Is Kevin Shine on the way out too?

This seems to be the hot topic of conversation in the media centre at the moment.

Obviously Donald's name is being mentioned, but given that Yorkshire turned him down only a couple of months ago and that last time he said he wanted the England job he was using it as a stalking horse... But how good a coach is he?

In my view there is no-one to touch Troy Cooley. Someone older and wiser than me mentioned Dennis Lillee - and that he could be persuaded over here - an interesting prospect indeed.

So what's the view on the board... who would be the best bet if Mr Shine is no longer flavour of the month?

Lillee would be a very good appointment but I'm not at all sure he'd take the job.

I think it's very hard for most of us to judge a good technical coach unless we follow a side so closely we can see a definite and unambiguous improvement in a player under a particular coach's toutelege. Otherwise we're reliant on third party feedback via the media about the effectiveness of a particular coach - and even that can get confused with the coach's popularity rather tha effectiveness.

Having said that, wouldn't it be exciting to have Dennis around the England camp..?

I obviously know of Donald's plaing career, but apart from what Kim mentioned earlier about a short stint at Warwickshire what are his coaching credentials?

He's had some sort of role in the SA set up, but I'm not sure what.

Lillee is the man in my opinion, but, like FS, I doubt he would commit to a full time contract with England. Either that or he'd demand a King's ransom...

This Cricinfo article seems to have the full story.

Quote:
The former South African fast bowler, Allan Donald, is being lined up as the England team's new bowling coach, after it was confirmed by the ECB that the current incumbent, Kevin Shine, would be reverting to an administrative role at the national academy in Loughborough.

Responding to an article in The Daily Telegraph, John Carr, the ECB's director of cricket, said: "When the board recruited Kevin in early 2006 it was always intended to be largely a Loughborough-based role leading the ECB fast bowling programme, which involves overseeing and managing the development of elite fast bowlers at senior and age group levels. It was on this basis that Kevin and his family relocated to the Loughborough area." ... (article continues)

I don't think that Lillee would want to base himself over here on a long term basis. He's more into running overseas bowling 'clinics' and pocketing very large fees for his admittedly excellent knowledge and pedigree. And even if he were interested I can't see the ECB paying the huge fees that he would command for that sort of contract. The absence of Fletcher removes one obstacle (I could never see those two working together) but Lillee isn't a shrinking violet and I'm not sure he'd tolerate the spineless doublespeak and lack of intelliegence often displayed by the ECB.

It looks like a clear out without calling it so. Shines's been allowed to go with dignity back to a job more suited to an an unremarkable county medium pacer from the 1980s. Could Graveney be the next head on the block?

I'm (1) suspicious of how credible this article and (2) how pragmatic/practical it is to replace somebody halfway through a series, and (3) not sure what anybody else could do different, given that the bowlers were all crocked - shouldn't the physio who said they were fit be replaced rather than the bowling coach.

Andrew Miller is generally a pretty reliable source, but his certainty doesn't seem to be shared very widely in the media centre this afternoon.

I don't see how it could work out with a big name like Lillee playing second fiddle to a relatively unknown coach like Peter Moores.

They say they're responding to the Telgraph article but I think they've been reading this thread (there have been a lot of guests on here today).

I had my doubts, I can spot manure from fifty paces.

Also it wasn't in the Guardian.

Erm, I think this article is almost word for word the same as the one I linked in my earlier post further up this page.
