MADNESS
But that was a par score for that pitch. The England batsmen are the ones that failed to match it.

Also, you have decent replacements for the middle order. Apart from Wood, I don't think you have better bowlers (and even there it's mostly like for like).

I think this is about right. I'd like us to be able to spell Wood for a test but Finn would be a real risk; Jordan has been injured and not very good when fit and Woakes is too soon back to be very seriously considered. I'd not be totally against Finn playing but other than that, it's only Rashid for Ali you could change and I think that probably slightly weakens both batting and bowling.

I also think Bairstow for Ballance is the right call and would promote Bell to 3 just to change things for him a little.

Sad for Ballance. Amazing to think it was so recently that people were banging on about how amazing our middle order was without Pietersen and what an amazing player Ballance was at 3.

Nonsense - in the history of good batting tracks the average 1st innings score is not 560/6
We had 1 bowler Broad who had the guile to remove people.

Ali/Stokes/Wood and Anderson were very poor.

Yet all will survive.

Calm down, I was being slightly sarcastic but not a complete exaggeration. Maybe you could have taken a few extra wickets (or catches) but 500+ is not a crazy 1st innings score at Lords, for example, http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/296909.html. And a few runs were scored in the game vs NZ.

But the main point is that the bowling replacements, as FS lists, don't actually make much difference. I think batting ones do.

James Taylor and KP can tweet each other about how it feels when monstrous county scores get you ignored by our selectors.

How comes James Taylor hasn't been summoned to Andrew Strauss to be told he's not playing? This favouritism for members of the Strauss captaincy clique is terrible. Taylor should be fuming.

Hadn't Taylor been having a lean season before that score?

Indeed, but only one of those would be likely to improve things.

Good point. They can tweet each other about how unfair it is that making one great score in two years of first class cricket and them picking someone averaging over 100 in the championship. It is just not fair on poor James and Kevin.

Well done to Ballance on getting reselected for Yorkshire as Bairstow's replacement.

I have no issue with Bairstow replacing the once much lauded on here by some Gary Ballance.

Good call, you could bat him 10 to strengthen the batting as well.
I've had a sneaking suspicion for a while that Anderson might go after this series, if he turns out to have a poor one.

Very surprised Adam Lyth survived. must have been a lack of alternatives.

Definitely no one stands out.

Lyth's fault seems a technical issue playing at the short of a length ball. That's fixable. Ballance just looks plain out of touch, no idea where his feet are at. As a number 3 he presents a negative mindset.

Not seeing that. He's still got a decent average for the year with some good performances. Not many bowlers can get much out of these pitches (without England batsmen to help them).

How the hell Lyth continues to get a game I will never know...If there is ever a player who looks totally out of place in test cricket it is Lyth.

Surely somewhere in the 100 County Sides in England there is a player who can open the batting at test level? He got a century in a game we lost and has looked **** in every one of his 7 other test innings.

Ballance is unlucky i reckon, Bell is finished and Lyth is just plain **** yet he is the one who gets dropped, at least he made runs when we needed them in the 1st test and no one else bar Root could!

Doesn't Scott Borthwick bat at 3 for Durham?

I get the impression his form has dipped recently but third highest championship run scorer accross the country and that batting on one of the more testing surfaces on the circuit.

If Bell fails again could he come into contention?

I did suggest that before the squad was announced...
