Out of Contracts at end of 2012/Trf gossip

We have two main ones:

Keth Barker who, sensibly, wouldnt sign an extension last winter and is now going to be offered a far more lucrative extension

Richard Johnson, a superb young keeper who Giles believes will score test 100s, who also wouldnt sign an extension because hes stuck behind Ambrose.
Looks as if he will play one day cricket this year though which might mke him think again.

Peter Moores as coach is a good incentive, he should be what he wants to be there. Bad news for Naqaash Tahir....

I thought Tahir was there to cover for injuries. Hopefully Shahzad is only on loan.

Didn't expect that to happen but then he won't really have to move and Chapple can't keep going on for ever. Not sure where this leaves Saj though.

funnily enough that's who I thought was likely to be the one with most to lose.

Edit: it's a loan for Shazad until the end of the season.

Shazhad straight into the 13 man squad for the match at Hove. No Kerrigan as he's with the lions so Keedy likely to play with Parry as back up. Expect it to come down to straight shoot out between Mahmood and Shazhad although Hogg is not guaranteed to play.

Are Shahzad and Mahmood going to have a literal shoot out. The first one to hit the wicket gets in the team.? It could take a while

Billy Godleman and Michael Comber released by Essex. Will anyone pick up Godleman now? How his star has fallen.

Because during three years at Essex he scored no runs. It was the same at Middlesex. His first class record for Essex was:

2010-2012: M 40 I 67 No 1 Runs 1,841 HS 130 Ave 27.89 100s 3 50s 8 Ct 22

If you feel you've got better, younger players coming through the ranks who are worth a first professional contract what other option is there? You can't hold onto everyone indefinitely. Talent is relative and, as illustrated by SbtS's stats, Godleman hasn't really delivered despite having arrived at Essex with a falr amount of Championship experience, and having played in 80% of their matches in a three season span.

His behaviour is probably part of it. Essex are very good at keeping things in house but Godleman has had his moments.

Surely Northants, Leics, Gloucs or similar would be willing to take a gamble on him (with a low salary)..?

Of course this is the side you don't (always) get to see behind the stats. I have read in quite a few autobiographies players praise to the skies guys whose stats looked ordinary for their attitude and contribution, while others have been the opposite.

Well, that's always the thing - see e.g. Thornley at Leicestershire.

I think my original point was that 23 seems such a young age for a guy who has clear talent to possibly completely vanish from the professional game. In cricket there's just the 18 sides and that's that (well, it is possible to earn some money beyond that but opportunities are relatively limited). But that's the way it is.

Maybe his stats don't look amazing, but if he were to play for Unicorns next year you'd still think he was a damn good talent to be doing so.

By my reckoning Surrey have ten players (excluding overseas) whose contracts are up this year: Batty, Burns, Harinath, Jewell, Jordan, Lancefield, Pietersen, Spriegel, Tremlett, Wilson. (It's possible some of them may have already signed extentions while I wasn't paying attention.)

I would imagine Batty will stay as he's had a good season with his bowling across all three competitions as well as assuming the captaincy. Burns has been a revelation since opening the batting, which could also enhance Wilson's chances of being retained as wicketkeeping cover if it's felt inappropriate to burden Burns with keeping duties. Harinath has finally come good with centuries in consecutive matches, so I would think he'll be offered a new deal. Pietersen's fate may depend upon the outcome of his ECB central contract; if he's finished with England and plays the whole of the IPL next year will he also drift out of county cricket?

There must be question marks over the other five. Tremlett is perpetually unfit. Spriegel is an automatic selection for both limited overs formats but seems to have been totally discounted as an option for Championship games. Jordan finally seems to have fallen from favour after being given a lot of opportunities to establish himself as an all-rounder, without making enough of an impression with either bat or ball. Jewell and Lancefield almost seem to have slipped off the radar as far as first team recognition goes.

As for the overseas spots, I doubt we'll see Nannes again after a disappointing T20 tournament. He was left on the bench throughout the IPL and looked badly undercooked when he arrived at Surrey having not played a match for three months. The problem with a number 11 batsman who is a poor fielder in that competition is that he can only really influence the game for four overs out of forty, so unless he bowls superbly for four overs he becomes a liability. Kartik has done a good enough job in the Championship games, but after losing Ramprakash and Maynard we may want a batsman. I suppose it may depend on who is available, but I'd be happy to retain Kartik on this year's perfomances.

Lancs could do with an all-rounder to replace Chapple but we could also do with some batsmen too!

My money is on him joining Notts as their players play for England unlike Surrey.
