Unsurprising to see Woakes so toothless when not taking the new ball...

Good ball from Woakes. Middle peg.

I got to "unsurprising to..." before the middle stump when for a tumble.

England have to enforce the follow on if given the chance don't they?

I'd say no, but hopefully the Windies will sneak past so the discussion becomes redundant.

We may have home umpires but one thing you can always guarantee is that they'll want to come in as soon as a bit of cloud comes over.

You mean the type of innings that he was picked not to play but that Foakes would play as his natural game?

Buttler played very well yesterday, and obviously he couldn't have played that innings if he wasn't in the team. But this kind of gushing is desperate, and we still look set for an inadequate first-innings total.
Yeah. Fair assumption that Foakes would score loads given that he scored 69 as his best knock last summer in 13 matches.

Foakes was dropped by England after failing to play those types of innings in the Caribbean against the same opposition. He doesnt look as comfortable against seam as Buttler does, so Im not sure hed have been able to play that innings.

Excellent day for England today, and a chance to make the most of morning bowling conditions to wrap up WI's innings. The toughest part could be figuring out how best to rotate the bowlers.

I'd say yes and try take the draw out of the equation. They have 5 bowlers (2 who are well rested) and potentially Stokes if needed.

I haven't counted but I'd guess it's about the same number of tests that Buttler has played since Foakes was dropped. I'm not really assuming, just speculating. I aspire to do it without sneering. With Foakes I suspect a large part of his troubles last summer were in the head, having been dropped by England after excellent keeping and an early test century. So I think that had England instead decided to invest in him, he might have performed better than he did, even against tougher oppo. But yes, it is all speculation.

Buttler was not dropped by England after failing to play those types of innings. Bess seemed able to do it today, minus the two sixes.

With the Foakes/Buttler comparison there is also the unquantifiable effect of Foakes's vastly superior glovework. But the main argument against Buttler has just been about Buttler looking inadequate with both bat and gloves.

Does Pope have any experience? I'm not sure best batsman automatically = best captain. Rory Burns would make more sense, no?

You can only hope Ali was being ironic. Stokes will prob be the next (permanent) captain unless someone else comes along.

Stokes and Burns are the same age as Root, who surely will be captain for some time. I'd imagine the transition will go to the next generation. England tend to go for their best batsman or best player which is why it wouldn't surprise me if Pope became a front runner in time.

Pope’s a very talented batsman with a great future. How does that make him an automatic pick for next captain? Ah yes, because being the best batsman is deemed the most appropriate qualification for running a team, devising game plans, making the right on-field decisions, facing the media, and being lucky with the toss. Obviously...

It's been quite a mediocre first half hour.
