The players, umpires and press all stay at a hotel on site, that's why we're only playing games at Old Trafford and Ageas as they have a hotel (hotels in Ageas' case) on site.

Pakistan win toss and bat, possibly a toss you didn't want to win with decent bowling conditions first up.

Stokes not 100% so it's an unchanged side from the last Test against the Windies.

I wonder if anyone is slightly concerned that we should be having to bat last on what is already a dry pitch?

I am. Pakistan are something of a bogey side for us. I love an attack with their variety. I simply can’t compute picking Bess over leach.

A fair amount of playing and missing, but we don't really look like taking a wicket at the mo.

Yes their seam/pace attack is quality and two spinners will be a cut above what England faced against West Indies. Given England didn't play the likes of Chase, then I have little confidence of them playing Pakistan spinners. As well as that 5 proper batsmen is one too few and can't help but feel 4 out can be all out very quickly.

Indeed ... Playing Woakes as the all-rounder instead of Stokes gives a very different team, as Woakes is usually selected for his bowling and Stokes for his batting. This team structure locks us in to selecting the spinner for his batting; but probably we'd be better off picking Crawley than Bess, since Woakes is never going to bowl as little as Stokes might have.

Good stuff from the change bowlers. One more wicket before lunch would be ideal.

Anderson posing very little threat, by far the weakest of the quartet today.

No-balls are being called at first sight by the third umpire in this match.

In the county matches just played, the on-field umpires had no difficulty doing the job themselves. Is international umpiring by an élite panel of umpires incapable of doing what domestic umpires do as a matter of course?

(I appreciate that in the current situation we haven’t got élite-panel umpires flying round the world to officiate at international cricket).

Dropped catch by Jos. Hardly surprising.

This is already turning into a standard First Test effort from England. Buttler drops Shan off Bess, a tough one but ought to have been taken.

Babar seems to be cruising effortlessly to a ton.

Indeed. He is averaging a couple of drops a year so that is two for this year.

Pakistan look likely to extend their unbeaten run against England
