Teenage centurions

Who was the last player before this year to score two hundreds in a Championship season as a teenager?

Joe Clarke did it earlier this season (he's since got a third hundred since turning 20 as well) and Haseeb Hameed, perhaps even more impressively, has just hit his second of the season as an opener (and against Stuart Broad and Imran Tahir).

Joe Root didn't manage it until he was 21 and was an England player later that year. Alastair Cook didn't manage it until he was 20 and he was also an England player later that year.

Daniel Lawrence and Dominic Sibley haven't managed it yet (despite being 3rd youngest centurion and youngest double centurion). David Sales, another to have famously scored big as a youngster didn't manage it until he was 21.

Hmm, Ben Stokes did it as an 18yo and then scored three as a 19yo.

That sort of surprises me, but then it sort of doesn't surprise me either.

Anyone think of any more examples, particularly opening bats?

Ian Bell made 3 in the 2001 season, aged 19.

Atherton made a couple in 1987, aged 19 but not confident that he was opening back then.

The tragic Australian maestro Archie Jackson made 7 f-c hundreds as a teenager, one of them in an Ashes Test.

Atherton's first century for Lancs first team was aged 20. Previous first class centuries were for the MCC (aged 18) and Cambridge University (aged 19)

I believe James Taylor did it for Leicestershire in 2009. In fact, he scored three tons.

I bet he'd give them all for just a half century this season.

Good shouts.

Now can anyone come up with an opener?

Struggling.

The best I have so far is Godfrey Bryan of Kent, who made a century opening against Notts on debut in 1920, aged 17 years, 245 days (the youngest ever Championship centurion) and then one against Hants in 1921, aged 18.

Alastair Cook made only one hundred as a teenager, and I saw it !

In my day being a teenage centurion meant drinking 100 shots of beer in 100 minutes. Many succeeded, many failed, many did both

I've asked my computer to tell me a definitive answer to this question, but I won't spoil the guessing game by revealing all.

I will say that only 3 teenagers have ever scored 2 championship 100s in the same season while opening the batting. And they once batted 1, 2, 3 in the same England test team. And I'm astonished that So77 hasn't got one of them.

Another good fact is that the only player other than Stokes to do it in 2 separate seasons is Denis Compton, who did it in 1937 and managed a couple as a teenager again in 1938, despite the fact that his 20th birthday was on 23 May.

Keysey! Blimey, how soon one forgets !

And Vaughan, and Tresco, as MM rightly suggests.

Just ran the same query on the Sheffield Shield, where it's only been done 13 times. Two of those are Jackson, and three are Ponting (at 17, 18, and 19). Matt Renshaw did it in the season just gone. Only 3 as opener (Jackson, Renshaw and Nic Maddinson a few years ago).

Yup. That's the only 3 to achieve the feat as openers.
