Symonds desirability in the auction skyrocketed when he announced he didn't want to tour Pakistan. McGrath must have been a bit miffed nobody wanted him mind you! 10 months retired and everybody forgets that you were the greatest seam bowler of your generation...... Good spinners are the key to 2020 cricket IMO. Look for the teams that have 2 or 3 good spin options to do well.

Interesting that Symonds has now backed down from his comments yesterday that he wouldn't tour Pakistan, saying today that he is still open to the possibility of touring there. You have to wonder if he just made the announcement yesterday, that he wouldn't tour Pakistan, to jack up his price at the IPL auction. I'm sure that was one of the main reasons he went for a lot more than the other Aussie players.

I think the Aussie team is still waiting on a security assessment of Pakistan to determine if it is safe to go, but if it is declared safe then any player that refuses to go would then be in breach of contract. I bet Symonds, Ponting and the rest of the IPL Aussie players will be praying that the assessment declares Pakistan unsafe and the tour is called off. Why would they want to go to Pakistan when they could be filling their boots in the IPL.

In my opinion, the IPL is a money making scheme by the BCCI and is based 100% on the global franchise system seen in the USA. Not my cup of tea but you can bet that the BCCI will try and promote it in the shallowest of ways.

I won't be supporting anyone, this whole scheme stinks to high heaven. First Scudamore and his plans for the premiership, now this. At least the organisers which will be watching a really **** poor form of cricket, although I suppose they'll get over it, what with their millions of dollars. This could the beginning of the end for my favourite sport. *******.

Never been a fan of T20 although oddly enough I do watch some of it when its being played outside the UK. Currently been watching the Stanford T20 on Sky. Maybe it seems more colourful than our domestic form

Vettori, Oram and McCullum could miss the start of their tour to England as they will be involved in the IPL.

Presumably it's just the warm-ups they're missing?

Yes I suppose, but not ideal when you are playing Tests early season in England to come from slogging in India. It might be that they are only a few days late and they do get some five day practice in.
Since come across this - 'The IPL, which operates on a pay-per-play model, starts on April 18, New Zealand's tour of England begin nine days later. That will leave the trio facing an interesting dilemma. Vettori, vice-captain McCullum and Oram may seek to delay their arrival in England, a move that could call their loyalty into question and hamper their preparation for a three-test series starting at Lord's on May 15. On the eve of the fifth and final one-dayer against England here tomorrow, Vettori reiterated his "heart was with New Zealand" although at the same time he wanted to fit in as many IPL games as possible before heading to England. Vettori had not decided whether he would be in England for the tour opener against the MCC at Arundel on April 27. "We're working through it at the moment," he said of his discussions with New Zealand Cricket (NZC). "I hope I'm available for a number of (IPL) games for obvious reasons but we have to sit back and wait." Reports out of India claim the IPL players would have to compete for their franchises up to May 5. If so, Vettori would play six of the 13 round robin games for the Delhi Daredevils. Were he able to meet that obligation he would still lose an estimated US$336,500 for missing the final seven games and possible semifinal and final. Vettori was unsure if the May 5 scenario was workable but suggested arriving in England 10 days before a test was viable from a player's point of view. "If it is May 5 then we've got 10 days before the first test starts, so it's still an extended period of time, longer than you'd have for any other tour," he said. I can understand that Vettori and the other NZ IPL players want to maximise their IPL payments, however it wouldn't be a good look with the NZ captain and two other senior players missing the early part of the tour, even if they are only warm-up games. According to this article May 5th is just 10 days before the first test. As FBU says that is hardly ideal preparation, especially when you are coming straight from an Indian T20 competition. I can see this sort of scenario of IPL v Country raising its ugly head quite regularly in future. We already have the Aussie players reluctant to tour Pakistan, supposedly out of security reasons, but also quite obviously out of their desire to jump aboard the IPL gravy train as quickly as possible.
