According to you, who is the greatest Nightwatchman (after Matthew Hoggard)

Single nominations allowed. I accept all points of view. Except your's.

This fits because I imagine they didn't have NWM before the 70s.

Mitchell Marsh, although I'm not sure why the Aussies wasted him by protecting Wade and Starc only and not more senior batsmen.

Batting orders as printed don't count otherwise Warner, Renshaw, Smith, Smarsh, Handscomb and MitchMarsh would count as NWM for Wade-o

In terms of batting ability (or lack there of) vs Output. Then Gillespie. I'd like to see how many balls he faced in test cricket.

I assume you mean the 1970s but night watchmen were much more numerous well before then, even before the 1670s and the establishment in London of the Bow Street runners, the forerunners of an organised police force.

The lives of early night watchmen are not well documented, so choosing a favourite is rather difficult.

So you vote for Dixon of Dock Green?

Interesting read Sans but I'm worried that by focusing purely on runs made that we are missing two other important aspects of the NWM.

1. The ability to play to the close and face as many balls as they can.
2. The ability to blunt and frustrate the opening bowlers on the following day

To me these are the most important attributes a NWM should posses. The runs are incidental.

I agree absolutely, Zebbie ... though with no. 2 one tends to find that when this happens, the anti-nightwatchman brigade immediately start moaning about how balls are being blocked that a proper batsman would be hitting for boundaries, and that the tactic has thus turned what should have been a magnificent brunch (with extra hash browns) into a bowl of watery porridge.

The anti brigade are usually people with a short attention span and a desire for STRIKE RATES and MAXIMUMS and are best avoided and ignored. For me the idea of seeing someone like Trott or Cook bat a whole session with a doughty NWM scoring 11 off about 100 balls is the stuff cricket-watching dreams are made of.

Derek Underwood.

Saw out over after over of fiery malice from Hall, Griffith, Lillee, Thomson, Roberts and Holding without so much as a knotted hankie on his head for protection.

Nah, he was a copper, though a very good one.

I suppose the ones who prevented the blowing up of the houses of parliament may be in the running, though I don't know their names.
