Will Coughlin still come if we cock up promotion ?
I'm assuming his contract is up rather than a release clause being triggered.

If Northants win this game I believe the gap will be 13 points. That pretty much leaves Notts requiring a draw next week, while Northants go to Sussex.

To my mind even finishing 2nd here is a failure. Notts should not be finishing behind Worcestershire, not with the resources they have available to them, no disrespect to The Pears. Peter Moores hasn't moved out last season's under-performers, some have made that decision themselves. Notts haven't brought through any new players so we'll be finding out in Division One whether or not Tom Moores and Billy Rot are up to it. Great.

I would hope that umpires are asked their thoughts but unofficially.

Seriously? Bayliss gets criticised for this.

With umpires I'm favouring an informal role rather than a formal.

And I'm absolutely serious about video. It allows every innings say Mark Stoneman has played for the last two years to be watched, rather than a selector catching him on a good/bad day and forming an opinion from that. That gives you a far greater sample size to assess from.

I wouldn't use it exclusively as I think you lose other aspects you may gain from being at the ground - how that player fields, the context of the innings, insights from people you talk to around the ground - but video analysis should be an integral part of the selection process. With this however the Chairman of the Selectors, assisted by the Academy Director and various coaching staff, you should have enough bodies to perform this role and allow for that to be covered without the need for conflicted selectors.

Bayliss is head coach and not chairman of the selectors. If you want him to pick players you need to sack Whitaker and give Bayliss final say over selection. Until then it's an unfair criticism and I don't blame him from shying away from selection controversy by saying he hasn't watched them. This should be the Chairman of Selectors justifying selection matters, but after his disastrous "Gary Ballance" interview, I'm not surprised he's kept away from the media.

There are a lot of blowhards complaining about it because they miss the friendly off-the-record chats that they get when the head coach is at a county game watching a player.

Because there aren't any ready for first team action, bar Root/Moores. Who funnily enough are playing in this game. Next!

Well, rather than poaching players from other counties, they ought to invest in their own 'talent'?

Or have they forgotten how to play in Notts these days?

Are we going down that one again? Look at where counties are located and check out the population centres in them. You'll see that some counties have far more densely populated "catchment areas" than others.

For example it's really no miracle that Essex have so many "home grown" players. They have most of east London to choose from and even the county of Essex itself is sizeable. It probably also has to be said that the local leagues in the East Midlands are not as strong as those in the North, West Midlands nor he Home Counties.

Notts have suffered greater loss in terms of batting talent than most counties in the past eighteen months, losing James Taylor, Michael Lumb and Brendan Taylor would be difficult for any side to cope with.

I suggest you read what I said. There isn't any batsmen at Academy or 2s capable of stepping up as of this season, apart from Moores/Root who have both had a lot of 'investment' placed in them. Hence the need to get Coughlin and hopefully Jennings. Do I like it no, Would I prefer a team stacked full of kids from Notts, yes. They have also invested a lot of money in Wood, Hutton, Libby, Patel (all playing today) Hales, Ball (with England) and Fletcher and Footit (both injured). All first team players all came through the Notts system in one way or another.

I have a very good idea how much time/resource/cash Notts invests in its Age Groups (actually via Notts Cricket Board not NCCC) EPP, Academy and 2s. So rather than chucking silly remarks around why don't you look at what is actually happening and not what you think is happening

I seem to have hit a nerve. From what you say, anyone would think that Notts haven't been poaching players from their neighbours for years.

Coughlin will but Keaton Jennings most likely won't.

The game at Hove next week begins to look more dangerous given that we've just made Worcestershire and Northamptonshire look like the Aussie side of the nineties!

No, he didn't say that. Try reading what he does say rather than continuing with your agenda regardless.

Maybe we should loan all of Leicester's players back to them to give them a shout against Northants.

No nerve hit and we haven't. So wrong on both counts. But hey don't let that spoil your fun, it hasn't done up to now.

Just an ignoramus who lives in the dark ages. Probably still thinks you should only play for your county if you were born there too (and both your parents and their parents)

So a draw and promoted.

Will we be the worst batting side ever promoted?
