No., but surely when you know that your batting line up is as green as the strip and the opposition bowling has a Curran, Dernbach, Clarke and the small matter of Morne Morkel surely you're not stupid enough to allow them the option of winning the game before tea on Day One?

Notts have too many youngsters in there right now, some of whom just don't look good enough. They also have senior batsmen just not performing, look at the contributions of Mull, Samit and Wessels.

Also, just look at Stoneman, Just loves playing Notts, looks like a rabbit against all other teams yet blasts an 80 at greater than a run a ball against Notts.

Hopefully we've enough points to avoid the drop because I'm far more interested in that end of the table than the top. Anyone who watches Notts will know that our form at the end of the season is always atrocious.

For me it isn't so much about ability it is more about mentality. This game and the Leics game are two different examples. In the Leics game we look complacent and from what I can see from the scoreboard in the Surrey game we lacked the mental ability to just dig in or worse still may have been afraid before we started.

Also I don't get this 'they are youngsters'

Jake Libby - 25
Will Fraine - 22
Billy Root - 25
Tom Moores - 21

Inexperienced at 1st team level maybe but not 'young'. They are also no younger than the likes of Curran, Virdi and Pope.

I can see the season fizzling out. Maybe a Qtr final in the T20 and 3rd/4th bottom in the CC.

Notts just don't blood them quickly enough. Though you could actually argue that Libby has now been around a few years so should be used to the pressure etc. The likes of Root and Fraine are either late developers or are of the "not ever going to be good enough" category. Root showed promise last summer but has shown little this year, if he's in the final year of his contract I can't see it being extended. Fraine looked like a desperation selection from the Unis when they realised we hadn't enough batsmen, being unable to replace Hales - thanks Alex, what a mess you've made this year.

The only players who don't have a contract for next year are Carter and Milnes.

I think that Fraine will be an asset to the squad eventually, but he's been thrown in at the deep end at the moment.

Libby has an opener's temperament and has been the most consistent of the top order batsman. I don't think that you can really criticize someone who is the 7th highest run scorer in the first division. Playing him in the T20 is, quite frankly, ridiculous though.

Is Carter injured? It was a pretty deep end Fraine got thrown into! Fair play that man, he did well.

I did toy with a couple, but just thought it a far too obvious opportunity!

Notts' poor t20 campaign looks like continuing, all that "talent" and they post crap totals week in week out.

Ricky and Mull have had very poor summers, the rest haven't been much better.

Samit opens the bowling, 6-6 first two balls. Oh dear, funnily enough its not worked, again.

Notts win 2 on the bounce, so its back in our own hands. Ricky and Mull seemed to find their form and Libby's runs have been a welcome surprise in this format.

It would be nice to get to the knock outs as the remainder of the CC is likely to be a nervous one, given the lack of an O/S batsmen (as things stand) and our habit of being very poor in the last month of the season.

Libby appears to have worked on some new shots. He now looks a half decent batsman in the shorter forms, good on him!

It appears that Ben Slater is joining Notts... well, sort of "appears". Apparently a story on Notts' website, since removed, announced his arrival and availability to play v Hants. The only snag being that he has still been playing for Derbyshire v Sussex.

He's now retired hurt with a concussion, allowing Anuj Dal to replace him in the batting line-up.

Unlike the rest of Div 1, who are all very adverse to signing other teams players and kolpaks.....

They're allowed to do that because it's only a little county and they can't be expected to produce all their own players.

I'm not picking on Notts here as it's been a general theme with a load of counties this past few months, but there are a load of average cricketers moving round. It seems like players who aren't good enough to play internationals, Lions or possible franchise cricket are a commodity worth paying for.

That's professional sport in the 21st century. Morne Morkel is the most valuable player in Championship cricket right now because he's always available barring injury. Simon Harmer was last year's equivalent. Hantsvaal hoped Kyle Abbott would play that role this year but it hasn't quite worked out yet.

Each county club has to play the rules as best they can. I grew up watching cricket in the era of the stellar overseas players: Richards (Viv and Barry), Greenidge, Garner, Procter,,Imran Khan, Sylvester Clarke etc. These guys played the whole season as there was no international cricket outside England during our domestic season in those days.

Half-decent English players who are unlikely to get an international call are valuable. That was always the case, but regular internationals play almost no county games these days. This is probably why every Division 1 county except Surrey tried to sign Sam Northeast last winter. He looks like the James Hildreth of his generation.
