So what is the England bowling combination going to be?

Will Crane be a replacement for Ali, seeing as he isn't going to get runs with Lyon licking his lips.

Pretty sure they said crane for overton. If we lose the toss then woakes, Jimmy and broad will get through some overs on Boxing Day!

Maybe Malan will get to bowl 15 or 20 overs...

However it appears that he's probably fallen a notch below what he's done in that intervening period and this might be somewhat near the end of the road, particularly if the knee issue he seems to have is an ongoing concern.

His record against the Aussies up until this tour has been possibly the outstanding feature of his career, however it has taken a battering here.
His bowling didn't hit the heights it has done but it was helped by conditions and some mediocre opposition so not much was said about his wrist position but it was mentioned occasionally and he was certainly cutting the ball before the tours of India and Bangladesh

I don’t see how dropping Ali or Broad is weaking the tail.

Yeah, best mention the cricket too.

You don't see how dropping someone with a test average of 33 for someone with a first class average of 12 weakens the batting? No wonder we all take all of your comments with a pinch of salt. Moeen is struggling this series but to say his is not better with the bat than crane is a bit daft.

But that's a pretty significant exception. I'd say getting annihilated by an innings three times on way to a 3-1 defeat at home is just as bad as a series whitewash away from home, to be honest. Ultimately, its only England who's won an away Ashes series in the last 15 years and its hard to see that change in 2019 - very few of Australia's batsmen have any clue against the moving ball.

Curran the lastest to be named for a debut by The Guardian.

Also .. Canterbury Cricket can confirm that Ben Stokes will return to the UK today for family reasons. He leaves with our gratitude for his time with us and for what he added to the squad during his time in Canterbury.

Paine in doubt for Boxing day, headed home due to family illness. Don't think they'll be dramatic changes to the squad, Handscomb or Bancroft will take the gloves. Starc is 50/50 to play.

This Aussie journo is not too enamoured of the Aussie quicks bouncing the English tail.

Dropping Ali, perhaps, but Broad, definitely not.

After what else happened in that match, I'm surprised the whole match hasn't been expunged from the record books.

I haven't actually seen any of the Aussie bowling to the tail. If the reporting in that article - that there have been whole overs of bouncers to them - is correct then you'd have to question at what point the umpires will step in. I mean, it's not like they need to do it, Jimmy and Broad will get out to any ball.

No excuse for England, but short-pitched bowling remains a ticking time-bomb for cricket.
