Who can forget how brilliantly this strategy has worked with the selections of Patel, Moeen, Ansari and Dawson in recent years?

I wouldn't be totally surprised if Virdi gets picked, I think he's potentially England's best Test spinner since Swann, but this is his first season other than 3 or 4 matches last year and he's a poor batsman and mediocre fielder. I'm a bit concerned about the number of raw young players who've been picked prematurely over and subsequently stalled over the past couple of years.
Letís not forget Alex Loudon.

The next England debutant will not be a bowler or an all-rounder. It will be an opener.

I was thinking about Virdi just to get some experience of being on tour and the sub continent rather than actually playing but I've just noticed the Lions have a tour of UAE at pretty much the same time so it makes much more sense for him to go on that.

I didn't mean as the only backup spinner like Crane down under but rather 4th choice when only picking 2.

You could narrow it down to plays his home games just south of The Thames I'd guess.

I was going to say Scott Borthwick will be ruing his injury then I remembered he's already made his debut although he's probably still annoyed at being injured.

Does it count if he didn't bat, bowl, or field?

As the game started, yes officially it does.

I think a couple of us forgot there were ODI's before the test series.

I can't imagine they'd drop Stone for the next game now either.

Isn’t it more Ed Smith than Bayliss/Farbrace?

So 22 Test debutants in those four years 2015-2018, so far, and six of them spinners

And how many have been a raging success? Hameed and Rashid done little wrong, and maybe TRJ and Sam Curran successes, but perhaps the most worrying aspect is some have probably had a line drawn under their careers, Ansari for sure, and several are on less solid ground in that regards than is likely to be seen in Sri Lanka during monsoon season.........

Really don't see many if any of Bess, Tom Curran, Crane, Wood, Ball, Overton, Dawson and Jennings having many more caps.

Put another way those who don't already have double figures may be lucky to reach double figures in most cases, and those on double figures may well not double their tallies.........

Tom Curran will get lots of caps, but perhaps not so many in Tests (although I wouldn't bet against it).

Burns and Foakes are the next debutants hopefully. 688 & 689.
686 and 687 were also from Surrey.

Glad we are getting a proper keeper but what happens for the 2nd Test when Bairstow comes back?
