To put Ian Bell's achievement in perspective, he is only a couple of ranking places below Sachin Tendulkar in the ODI Batting standings! If he can consolidate his position over the next 12 months, England's ODI fortunes will continue to improve, I'd suggest.

One Test match goes by and they update the Test player rankings immediately. Eight ODI matches go by and they still havenít updated the ODI player rankings. Are they waiting for KP to hit another ton so he doesnít drop down too far?

I know. With the Eng/Ind 7 ODI series they updated after 4. I remember when PriceWaterhouseCooper did the rankings they were updated more frequently.

Bizarrely they have updated the ODI championship after 3 games but not the players rankings. I'm guessing that we'll have to wait until this series and the India v Australia one finishes.

63* yesterday. They'll be cranking up the ratings machine now, ready to release the findings after KP top scores on Saturday.

If you look at an individual player's rating graph, you will find a rating for every single match, but matches since the last rankings were published cannot be seen until the next update.

The batsmen's rankings will all fall, except for Shah and Cook.

Of course, Swann will appear somewhere on the radar, below 100. Bell, Colly and KP were all quite high up, so their relatively meagre pickings in SL will drop them down. Mind you, the SL batsmen will be dropping down the tables too.

The fact that the games have all been pretty low scoring, Sri Lanka's 260 in the first innings of the first game aside, will preserve the batsmen's rankings somewhat. The par score for a game is judged on how many runs are scored in total.

The ODI championship is updated game by game. It involves an infinitely more simple method to work out the rankings, and is only affected by the straight result - win, lose or tie.

England could actually get up to 5th in the rankings if the Aussies win the next game against India and South Africa give Pakistan a kicking.

Interesting that Jimmy only went down 1 place despite not having the best series!

He had a cushion of 30 points between him and the bowler below him but even so he lost 20 points which was quite a lot.

But he must be gratified to know that he is ranked higher as a batsman than Luke Wright.

Strange Darren Gough has a ranking. When was the last time he played a international match?

September 2nd 2006 v. Pakistan*. Only just over a year ago. I think someone said you remain in the rankings for about 2 years after your last match before dropping out?

*8-0-44-0. 1 run with the bat. Pak won.

I think it's 18 months rather than 2 years. It surprises me that he last played as recently as that but given how stupid the selectors are at times...
