And all these pathetic examples of "oh yes, well player x, y, z from 50 years ago also used to drink" how does any of that justify the current behaviour?

unless there is a wholesale change in player and fan culture, certain players will never be held accountable and not feel like they need to be held accountable.
You don't half like having made-up arguments with nobody, do you Billy?

So apparently Wood was impressive in the warm up game with Tom Curran the standout on a slow pitch. Safe to say he won't be playing if our perceived problem is a lack of pace so the question is how long will it be before Wood breaks down again?

Other contenders to have played themselves into the team include a not-so-pretty little 45* from Ballance.

Seems to be the suggestion from what noise there is. Wood not quite deemed ready but probably quite likely for the 4th test if he doesn’t break down by then.

I'd hope for the 2 dead rubbers the would make quite a number of changes.

That strategy generally confirms the 5-0. Backing players who have not been too far away in the first couple of Tests to string together 4 or 5 days is the most likely way to avoid the whitewash, especially if the Aussies take their foot off the gas.

Didn't Einstein say the definition of madness was picking the same average players time after time ?

Once there series is gone we should be focusing on the future.

Rebuild a new team.

Problem is, who in the squad could actually offer an improvement? I think the only option is bring Foakes in as keeper, move Bairstow up and drop Vince.

Ballance has tried and failed so many times he's about as likely to succeed as Shaun Marsh.........oh!!

I thought exactly the same earlier.

Neither Ballance or Vince look anything like test match #3's (Ballance only had success at #3 when playing against awful pace attacks) and unless Jennings has found a way to take off his cement boots I can't see him prospering in this season either. To top it off both Ballance and Jennings are lefties when we could really do with another RHB to mitigate Lyon.

How's Hameed's recovery going?

As a notional Lancs fan my first thought was Hameed but I haven't heard anything other than he should be ok for the start of the English summer.

The glaring weakness in the squad selection was no reserve opener and/or specialist number 3.
Vince was very lucky to get the gig, but to be fair he did threaten to score an innings defining score in the first test - I am not sure if another batsman has?
I still do not believe that Malan is Test class.
I feel a little sorry for Balance - he is probably the best No. 5/6 in the country but England want him to be a No.3

Personally I would go with

Cook
Stoneman
Jennings
Root
Bairstow
Balance
Vince
Ali
Woakes
Broad
Anderson

In the long term I would take the gloves off Bairstow (IMO he is one of our best 3 batsmen so should be shaping games). Also I hate the idea of a specialist batsman picked at 7 but we need to score runs. I remain to convinced about Jennings technique but he will fight and is capable of delivering a few overs if required (I hate bits and pieces selections, but...)
We need to put a big total on the board. Without that we simply cannot win

Last I heard is that they want him to be on the next leg of the Lions tour wherever that is.

Didn't Gaz play 5 when he came back into the team against Pakistan?

I quite like reading Mike Selvey articles. He thinks the Xl picked in Adelaide is the best available but he’d move people around.

3. Malan
4. Root
5. Bairstow
6. Vince
7. Ali

Think that looks slightly better than before.

It does but if we're just going to mess the batting order around Root should go up to 3 again, long term I don't have an issue with him at 4 unlike some people but not sure Malan is really suited that high up and it means there's 3 left handers at the top.

Lions and then start summer with Lancs sounds sensible.

Malan at 3 WTF?
He doesn't bat at 3 for his county who he averaged 35ish for last year when they were relegated.
More Selvey madness
