I think the rain has put paid to England's prospects of victory, although a couple of wickets in the first hour and things could still get interesting.

Super Sam in for New Zealand.

I never thought Monty would **** on a bouncer either.

Travis Head surely would be worth a punt, though you would have thought at the expense of one of the ordinary Marsh brothers.
Agree with Burns. Australia would take an average of 39 with 3 test tons next to his name to partner Warner at the moment, at least until Renshaw gets his mojo back, who was never dropped on his test form. If Bancroft can't cope against England at home, then I don't see how he's expected to do any better away against the Saffer quicks?

Maxwell is one of the few batsman to average +40 in shield over the last several years, is the best fielder in the country by a mile, and his bowling average is just as good (read: poor) as mitch marsh's. So I can only imagine he's on the wrong side of Smith and Mgmt? Sad. Personally i'd throw Khawaja to open with Warner and bat Maxwell at 5.

Surprising things you'd never expect of particular cricketers.

Bit harsh on Monty - his bowling and batting are far better than Mo’s current form.

This really is an appalling wicket. Nothing in it for the bowlers, and difficult for stroke play for the batsman. You'd think on day 5 it would at least deteriorate a bit.

Yup. We don't look like we'll take another wicket if we bowl all day.

Is Moeen selected as a specialists fieldsman? Or are mgmt under the illusion that his bowling and batting are of value?

Swann should be coaching Moeen - great insight on BT.

Well, it's given Cook 4 more years in the team.

This is dire from England. Declaration bowling at a team who has no intention to declare. Curran and Ali are not test standard.

Believe me - if he gets 2 wickets he’s also in for another 4 years.

I don't think all of the great spin bowlers in the world could help Ali. Sometimes you just have to fall back to a statement that seems to elude the modern mindset..."not good enough".

Yeah but they do seem to be insistent on picking him. Suspect he will play in Sydney too.

Curran reminds me of Ryan Sidebottom. All huff and bustle but not threatening at all. Still, on a green belter during a cloudy day in May he'll suddenly look useful no doubt.

BTW Malan is offering exactly the same as Ali. Why isn't Root having a bowl? Like Hick before him, very underused.
