I suppose Stokes coming back would allow England to drop Ali. I’d imagine that if Cook doesn’t retire, they’ll want to keep the same top 5 going, with Stokes and Bairstow slotting back in at 6 and 7. Woakes is more than good enough at 8, although there are clearly question marks over his bowling again. I think they’ll persist for now.

What spinner should they pick? I think we have to accept that Broad and Anderson are absolute rabbits with the bat these days, so picking a Leach, Bess or Crane is fairly risky.

The other option is to pick somebody who could do the 8/9 batting job, but they’d have to be a better spinner than Ali. Are Rashid, Rayner, Dawson, Patel etc better spinners than Ali? Not much evidence of that. The one thing you could say is that Rashid would provide a bit of mystery on flat pitches (away from home).

I understand the doubts that England can make a game of this, depending as it does on the senior players pulling their weight. Broad and Anderson at least gave it everything today in ideal batting conditions.

Cook, Root and Moeen will get their chances when England get to bat on a flat track with no spin on offer. Lyon will need to be effectively neutralized. Seems likely the eventual outcome of the test is likely to hinge on whether England can manage such.

The pitch was disappointingly flat again. I attended and it's amazing to see a straw-coloured placid deck on day one. England was a tad unlucky but kept the bowling tight with tough fields to penetrate.

It's not exactly a batting paradise though is it? It's pudding. Will probably get slower and lower as the test goes on as well. 400 will be a very good first innings score. Rubbish test wicket.

Even if England managed to induce an Aussie collapse to circa 350, that would probably be around 100 or so runs too many for this batting line up.
Possibly a good call as England's new ball bowling has been terrible all series, other than second innings in Adelaide.

The pitch looked a belter for Warner before lunch.

Fortunately England tightened it up after lunch and were much improved.

About 83mph. I thought he did ok.

Yet Warner wasn't too far off a century before lunch.

I donít think he really thinks that either. I said a few posts further up that if England induced a collapse that it was still 100 more runs more than was they would be able to reply with. It of course could still be even worse than that.

Agree entirely. This sort of dull, lifeless test pitch will be the death of test cricket. There are some radical changes that must be made to the game to ensure that Test cricket is a spectacle. It is sad for 80,000 Melbourne fans to be treated to such a boring day and I feel for you.

C'mon guys. One after drinks. Get Mo and Woakes off. Give Broad and Anderson another burst.

Incredible that Root is persisting with a horribly ineffectual bowler - it’s embarrassing.

This is absolute pie from Mo. These are easy runs. Only half an hour to lunch. We need 2 quick wickets.

England getting back in to the game now, Englands nemisis in now. I think this pitch is going to start getting variable bounce by the time Englands second innings comes along though.
