Kent have seemingly accepted that Northeast is leaving and have provisionally offered the captaincy to J.P.Duminy on a two year Kolpak deal.

Allan Donald instrumental in the offer, although he still doesn't have his coaching badge and it remains unclear if he will get it in time to take up his role at Canterbury next season.

Kent Director of Cricket interviews next week.

Downton and Fulton two of the more surprising names said to be under consideration.

I've no clues as to Jean-Paul's leadership credentials but I do like the idea of Kent stepping away from the ancient 'line of succession' policy.

I have no idea whether this is true, but if it is, can we ask that J-PD brings Morne Morkle as part of the deal?

Kent are working on a South African fast bowler but don't think it will be Morkel.

Allan Donald a big supporter of Duanne Olivier, I believe.

But then it is uncertain if Donald will be allowed to take up his post at Kent next season and I don't think a deal has yet been concluded with Duminy's agent.

All we know for certain is that come the start of the season Kent will have a new captain and a new Director of Cricket and hopefully a new overseas bowler.

Some will complain that the uncertainty is a bit chaotic with Kent's first pre-season friendly v Hants only nine weeks away. But anything is better than the complacency, medicocrity and parochialism that has hung like a bad smell over the last decade of failure...

It has just been pointed out to me that Duminy has form in changing his mind. Five years ago, Surrey announced they had signed him... but for some reason he never showed up.

Kent really don't need such a double disappointment after announcing they had signed Allan Donald as a coach for 2017, only for him to be prevented from taking up the post after he was denied a visa because he lacked the relevant coaching qualifications!

He retired from all first class cricket about 4 months ago so if he is planning to play for Kent in the CC he'll be changing his mind again.

To replace a player of Sam Northeast's quality would be very difficult and a Kolpak signing would appear the only option. Would suggest that Kent may also need another couple to make them competitive as a bowling side as well. At present everything seems very unsettled so the new Director of Cricket will have a hard task thats for sure.

Could Kent really expect Duminy to play in all formats of game, it looks a long shot to me.

It will be great if Kent can tempt the Cape Cobras captain to Canterbury, whether full-time or as T20 Blast captain - he's clearly doing some fantastic work with young cricketers in SA : - https://www.iol.co.za/sport/cricket/...wlands-8755756

Meanwhile I hear half a dozen applicants for the Director of Cricket role were interviewed yesterday and today....

It's usually better not to believe what one reads in the DM, but for what it's worth, they are saying Paul Downton is favourite to take the Kent 'Director of Cricket' job, but that Paul Farbrace is also 'on the shortlist':

In this instance, the Daily Mail is at least partially correct. I told you on here 12 days ago that Downton was on the shortlist.

I'm not sure they are right about Farbrace. I'm told he was approached by Kent and encouraged to apply - as he was by Worcestershire - but gave both counties the same answer, namely that he wants to stay with Team England at least until the 2019 world cup.

Downton is having a 'round two' interview with Kent this week at which his appointment is likely to be confirmed.

Duminy has rejected Kent (although we might see him in the T20).

Sam Billings will next week be named as the new Kent captain and Northeast will be released from the remaining year on his contract.

Can also confirm that Downton has got the job. Announcement tomorrow or Friday, probably.

Strange decision to appoint Billings as an absentee captain.

He will miss April and May at the IPL. He will then be available for the first week of June before disappearing for six weeks until July 18 with the England T20 and ODI squads v Scotland, Australia and India, for a non-stop programme of nine ODIs and four T20s.

Denly as vice-captain likely to lead the county in as many matches as Northeast - edit, whoops I mean Billings!!!

It's bizarre. It's been some considerable time since counties gave the guv'nor's job to anyone likely to be absent on international duty, let alone off on an Indian odyssey.

How different to the first Test series I watched on TV, during which the England team featured six county skippers (Boycott, Lloyd, Denness, Edrich, Fletcher, Greig).

Whose decision is this, Downton's?

No, must be chairman and two CEOs, the outgoing one and the incoming one plus chair of the cricket committee (who I think is also soon to stand down). But decision has to be rubber-stamped at a full commitee meeting next week.

Shame they didn't get Duminy, who might have been the Eddie Barlow/Dale Benkenstein overseas captain many think Kent needs.

Billings is likely to play in the T20 internationals. But if he makes the ODI squad he will be carrying the drinks , so he may get released back for the odd T20 game as Kent's frst four Blast fixtures all overlap with England duty. But not knowing from one match to the next who the captain is going to be and relying on the whim of Strauss and Bayliss over releasing fringe members of their squad is hardly ideal.

The situation seems a complete mess to me. The season is not that far away and the club is in turmoil. Appointing someone who will not be there for a good portion of the season as captain seems crazy and only increases the lack of stability at the club. Losing Coles and Northeast means we are so much weaker than before. As I have said unless they make some quality signings this season is going to be painful to watch. Am hoping for some positive news but to be honest am fearful for this season. Mr Downton certainly has inherited a hard job!

I suppose it is possible that Billlings will take the responsibility of captaincy seriously enough to decline to play in the IPL.

But as he's already entered the draft and set his base price at 160,000 US dollars - and will be hoping to go for perhaps four times that sum - nobody could really blame him if he sends his team mates a tweet from Mumbai saying 'see you at the end of May' !!!

Reading Graham Johnson's quote that we will be making signings before long I can only hope the new recruits will be of high quality as we certainly need some. Anyone heard any rumours who they may be.
