They have also now signed 19 year old Lincolnshire seamer Andy Carter on a three month contract.

I can't see Notts signing a Kolpack seamer this late in the day! If Harris, Franks and Clough aren't good enough for 1XI what are they doing on the staff? Even if Sidebottom and Broad are selected by England that leaves Notts with 8 seamers to select from.

I think Fletcher and Carter are going to be great prospects for the future. 6"6 Luke Fletcher (19) took 21 wickets for 2XI last season will add yet more height to a seam attack which includes Shreck 6"7, Broad 6"6 and Sidebottom 6"4. Carter is somewhat more of a surprise given that he played just two 2XI games. However, the fact that he was named in the squad for the pre-season tour of South Africa shows the regard with which he is held.

I believe there are two more youngsters in 2XI who have what it takes to make it. The first of these is 22 year old batsman Will Sabey who scored two hundreds for 2XI in 2007 and the other is 18 year old seamer Ian Saxelby.

Harris has been a decent backup bowler in the past, but had a very poor season last year. Franks looked as if he might be getting back towards the very useful form he was in before injuries got in the way. Clough plays mostly one-day cricket, but did surprisingly well in his very limited appearances in CC Div 2 last year.

I'd be a lot happier if Footitt was free of injury. He may be a bit expensive, but he takes wickets.

It will be interesting to see how Fletcher and Carter get on this year. In fact, it looks like an interesting year all round, what with Read's captaincy and some hard choices to be made between batting experience (but not a stunning record - e.g. Wood, Shafayat) and promise (e.g. Hales).

Any relation to Mark(?) Saxelby who IIRC use to be at Notts?

Yes, nephew of both Kevin and the late Mark Saxelby who both played for Notts.

Mark Saxelby also briefly played for Durham. Another tragic cricketing death.

Good Start

Well done to the boys down in Canterbury. Went to see Notts play Kent in a friendly 2 weeks ago and we looked rusty so really pleased we have started the Championship well

Interesting that Swann batted at number 7. I wonder if Newell is trying to do what he did with Read when he promoted him to 6? Or perhaps it was a bit of clever psychology, aimed at getting a positive reaction from Ealham and Franks, both of whom have a better first class average. If so, it worked a treat.

I think the former. I recall Newell saying at the end of last sumer that Swann and Broad would bat up the order a bit this season to showcase their all-round abilities to England. We'll probably see Swann and Broad at 7 and 8 when available. 9 is really too low for Ealy, but if you're the last specialist batsman and see Mark Ealham striding out to the crease at the fall of the 7th wicket, you're gonna be a fairly happy bunny I'd have thought, and opposition attacks may have to think twice about running through our tail, too.

Fletcher seems to be doing OK against Oxford UCCE - better figures than Broad so far.

Why isn't Sidebottom playing? I thought the ECB had given him permission to play?

He was interviewed the other day saying he can't wait to play in this game.

I don't know - but I assume that Newell wanted to give Fletcher and Harris a chance to play; Franks needs to bowl if he's to become more consistent; and naturally Newell wanted Broad to make his debut. It's not as if Notts need to win this one, hence leaving out Sidebottom, Shreck and Pattinson. I'm pretty sure Footitt would have played if he had been fit.

Durham fans were puzzled by Colly's absence as well. Players Like Vaughan & Hoggard are cleared to play for Yorkshire but Sibo & Colly were asked to rest.

That's easy Colly and Sibo played in all the twenty20's, ODIs and tests. Vaughan and Hoggard didn't. Don't forget KP isn't back playing yet and these are three players who places seem assured.

It's quite pleasant in sunny Leeds today - actually rather cloudy with a high probability of showers. Inspection at 11:30 I've heard. This should be a really interesting match if the weather allows much play. I'm looking for a competitive performance from Notts.

Oh for the reliability of Gallian and Bicknell. Once again, we look like asking our all-rounders to make up for our openers' shortcomings. It's been a fine start to the season, but not for Jefferson and Wood (or for that matter Shafayat).

Notts batting is so deep, though, with Ealham down at nine! They can afford to have a few hiccups at the top of the order, it seems.

We're going to miss him when he decides to retire. Probably the most consistent Notts player over the last 4 years. He should be very proud of the way he's performed.
