Newell also revealed that Alex Hales would be in the squad for the game against Somerset and could be in line for a debut.
I presume this means we'll be dropping fireworks

Nice to see the worst keeper in international cricket get a duck today.

That's a bit unfair; the Notts thread is only to be used to moan about other keepers than Read, preferably in an unreasonable way and anyone who raises the slightest objection clearly does need slapping down.

Exactly, and the same would be true even if he wasn't blatantly the best man for the job.

I don't think England normally picks keepers to carry the drinks though, nor has Read convincingly demonstrated adequate international drinks carrying form.

Not untrue, but that's what every other thread on the board is for too. That's the only explanation for how often it happens.

I like the way he was day dreaming 15 yards from the stumps when Shah made the run out. If he hadnt hit direct, they would probably have managed an over throw by the time it would have reached him.

Indeed, he really doesn't have a clue what he's doing behind the stumps does he? If Shah's throw had been an inch further one way he would have missed and Prior not being up to the stumps would have lost them the wicket.

He isn't, and never will be, an international standard keeper.

Hi Chaps.

Massive game for our mobs this week. If we can beat you I think that will put your challenge to bed for this year. I must say I am amazingly impressed you are still comptitive. This season you have lost Broad and Sid for the whole summer. Then England tried to ruin Pats. Now you are without Swann and Patel. Without four of your best five players you have done amazingly well. I am looking forward to a good game between our teams who were tipped to struggle this year!

Hopefully be on a bit during the game but our new addition to the family is (as my wife puts it) slightly more important than cricket. Unbelievably I actually agree with her.

Laters

Sir Virgs.

The way Somerset got bloody lucky with the rain against us may be the crucial factor, unfortunately.

Anyway let's see how good Somerset's batsmen are away from Taunton against a good attack when the pressure is on!!

Wish England would let us have Swanny though as he isn't going to play for them on Weds.

FFS I see that ****** Moores has decided to let Harmison play but not Broad for the rest of the season after the internationals as he need to 'rest'. Very good of him to let us have Swanny and Patel back eh?

THERE'S A WHOLE BLOODY MONTH BETWEEN THE END OF THE COUNTY SEASON AND THE STANFORD SERIES YOU SODDING CLOWN.

Mick Newell will await a decision on whether or not Graeme Swann can be included before finalising his team to face Somerset at Trent Bridge.

Swann is in the England squad to face South Africa at Cardiff but should be released to play for Notts if Samit Patel retains his place in the starting line-up.

Rob Ferley is omitted in anticipation of Swann’s return but Luke Fletcher and Alex Hales are on standby should the England spinner be retained.

“Team selection is always up in the air when there is a possibility of an international player returning but we have enough players in the squad to give us some good options,” said Newell.

“It’s a very important game because of the league positions of the clubs and the fact that Somerset have a game in hand and it will be important to get the upper hand from the first day.”

Will Jefferson and Bilal Shafayat will open the batting with Ashwell Prince set to make his first LV County Championship appearance at Trent Bridge.

In form duo Mark Wagh and Matt Wood are also included with four from Paul Franks, Mark Ealham, Andre Adams, Darren Pattinson and Charlie Shreck to share the seam-bowling duties.

Nottinghamshire squad to face Somerset (from): Will Jefferson, Bilal Shafayat, Mark Wagh, Ashwell Prince, Matt Wood, Alex Hales, Chris Read, Paul Franks, Mark Ealham, Andre Adams, Darren Pattinson, Charlie Shreck, Luke Fletcher
Surely England should just release Swann to play for us? He's blatantly not going to play ahead of Patel unless Moores reaches yet more new levels of stupidity.

I like the way Hales and Fletcher are on standby just in case Swanny isn't released. So Newell doesn't know if he's going with four or five bowlers if Swann isn't available. We all know the priority for seam bowlers in that squad should be Shreck, Patto, Ealham, Adams, Fletch and then Franks but no doubt Mick has it 4) Fireworks, 5) Adams, 6) Fletcher.

Anyway hopefully the team will be:

Jefferson, Shaf, Wagh, Prince, Wood/Hales*, Read, Swann, Ealham, Adams, Patto, Shreck.

*I'm not overly bothered by which of these. Wood has been crap all season but did score some runs on a flat pitch at Hove and it would be an odd time to blood Hales now. We know which Newell will go go for anyway.

Fletcher and hales are token inclusions with almost no chance of playing. The biggest poser for me is if fireworks gets a spot ahead of Adams again.

If so, Newell needs his head looking at.

Before the SWALEC Stadium hosts the opening Test on July 8 next year, Glamorgan also plan to install a permanent replay screen, improve the facilities of their cricket centre and are installing a £600,000 drainage system to the outfield similar to those used at Lord’s and Old Trafford.
