Curran got away with it a bit here. Southee missed two big chances

That dead ball rule from our final delivery is a shambles. That has to be a single.

Come on woakes.

And we’ve abandoned test cricket for this ?

Well played NZ. Not sure about some of our top bowlers not bowling out. Captaincy ?

In the end New Zealand won because one of their batsmen went on to make a big score and none of England's did. Joe Root might have but got another entry in his pretty little fifties thread. Perhaps Buttler came in too late.

Not sure about that, it was just easier chasing than it was setting a score on that pitch.

Buttler came in pretty much where they want him to with 20 overs left and a bit of time to get his eye in before really cashing in, it was just for once he really struggled to get the ball of the square in the last ten overs even though he was pretty well set, he started off really well and then just seemed to struggle when their proper quicks came back on.

I'm really not a fan of Roy/Bairstow/Root at the top of the order, England never seem to learn that you want people who like hitting over the top in the first ten overs not Bairstow and Root and as we lose a wicket in the first ten overs a lot of the time (which I'm not blaming Roy and Hales for as they're played/paid to take risks) we need another big hitter coming in at 3.

The match was won with the toss - once the dew set in it was hard for the bowlers to control it. Giving Rashid that second over at the end wasn't clever either, the two sixes turned it all back in NZ's favour.

Pretty simplistic. England didn't score enough in the final 10 overs. Before that point, England were well placed to win the match. All the talk of dew is just excuses.

Would NZ have bowled so well in the final 10 overs with a damp ball and slippery conditions for fielders?

I have no doubt that had England been chasing we'd have seen a different result.

Well, keep blaming the conditions and don't try and remedy any other problems. If England had won the toss, it would have been a different game so making that assessment is spurious at best.

Williamson to miss the 2nd ODI with a hamstring injury by the look of things. I wonder if Mark Wood will return for England? Apparently he played a full part in training yesterday despite having been sent for a scan.

Excellent fielding display by England, no idea what Morgan is thinking at the end of the innings by keeping Curran going and not bowling Woakes out but anyway a well underpar total it seems.

Dumb from Bairstow. England have been easing themselves into a very comfortable position and he guides the ball to third man for a simple catch. Could still be an awkward chase.

Turns out it's been easy so far. Stokes back in the swing of things.

You're right, if England win the toss it's a very different game!!

Seriously good performance in the field by England though, wickets up front, spinners controlling the middle (helped by a dry ball to bowl with), whilst the fielding was outstanding.

Still slight issues at the top of the order, but nothing serious.

Kiwis with big problems, Taylor now injured too and a doubt for the 3rd ODI.
