Youngsters who have stepped up over winter
At Essex it looks like Jamie Porter a 21yo RFM bowler who played a couple of games towards the end of last season will take the new ball for Essex.
He's had an impressive pre-season including a 6 wicket haul against (an admittedly Capey-less) Surrey. He's taken the new ball (and a wicket) against Cardiff uni today. What other young players gone from fringe player to first XI over the winter?

Matthew Hobden is playing for Sussex. He's a seamer, that's as much as I know. We don't really have any spinners of note so he may play a bit this season while Anyon and Hatchett are unfit.

Cheers Sharky - is he basically filling in for injuries rather than being slated to be a regular?

But while not strictly stepping up over the winter, surely at Essex this will be The Year of The Browne. |

Dan Lawrence or Kishen Velani are more likely to make this list from the Essex batsmen. Who was the bearded batsman you were talking about Pinner?

Neil Pinner, formerly of Worcestershire, signed for Leicestershire after making a lot of runs for their 2s. Scored 165 against the Cambridge studes but we'll have to see how he gets on in what will be another barren season for Leicestershire I reckon.

No, Hobden is a genuine young fast bowler who impressed last season and will be competing for his place on merit. He is slower than Mills, maybe a little quicker than Jordan.

Really hoping Essex bat when they visit The Oval next Sunday and I can see him open. Looking forward to that.

Well no messing from Essex picking 17-year-old Dan Lawrence for their Championship start.

I knew Lawrence was in the mix, but I think it's more because players aren't available (Cook, Bopara) although I thought Velani was pencilled in. Good to see him given a chance over Pettini though.
He's not the only 17yo making his fc debut today as the highly rated Matthew Fisher is making his debut for Yorks today. Big things are expected of him. Other newish names Tom Bailey at Lancs (although he turns 24 during the match) Ivan Thomas at K*nt (although he turns 24 in September) Jake Ball at Notts (he's already 24)

Will be interesting to see how Sam Haim from Warwickshire gets on. Fisher from Yorkshire is another exciting prospect.

18 year old Harvey Hosein looks for the time being to have the gloves for Derbyshire.
Will also be interesting to see how Tom Taylor gets on this year after a soldi debut in 2014. |

Matt Hobden is worth keeping an eye on - last season he was fast and wild and a seemingly long way away from regular first-team cricket - this year he has developed some control without losing pace - dont think many batsmen will fancy facing him. Should improve still further as long as he remains relatively injury-free

Thanks Maty - what's the score with Hosein? Did he force his way in or get the job by default? Is a batsman or a keeper first?
I noticed Tom Taylor's having a nice game v Lancs.

Do we need another plodding left hander from Essex? One is enough for me.
