Not really sure why Ali went out there playing like that when we were still 50 or so behind. England need to keep batting and batting.

a 120 run lead would ensure England can't lose this, and make them hot favourites to win with a draw second. been very unimpressed with Bird. Offers no threat and expensive.

Cummings bounced out Woakes now, who took the bait hook, line and sinker instead of taking a good look first after the break. What a shame, but now we’ll see what Curran can do with the bat in support of the indefatigable Cook.

The ground was close to full on Boxing Day with a reported 88,000.

What an effort by Cookie - 200 up now.

Lead is a healthy looking 89.

Really looking forward to all the analysis of cook which starts "if you exclude his double hundred at the MCG...."

Brilliant.

Great to see broad get his head down to support him.

Cook has lost it.

81 - Alastair Cook is the first England batsman to hit multiple double centuries in the same calendar year since Wally Hammond in 1936, 81 years ago. Gun. #Ashes*

Fantastic partnership from Cook and Broad, taking the game right away from Australia.

Cook now with the highest ever score by an opposition player at the MCG, incredible turnaround in form after he could barely buy a run in the first 3 tests.

MPV banging on about getting Aus in to bat now while they’re tired. NO NO NO. Eng must stay out there as long as possible. Get the runs now, fewer to chase on day 5, surely?

Controversy continues.

How is that out? Outrageous decision to give soft signal out when the fielder knows he didn't take it cleanly so from 100 yards the umpire has to give signal not out.

So why did the fielder claim it?

Very weird, it seemed like he caught it again after it bounced out of his hands but impossible to tell if after he somehow got hold of it a second time if it got regrounded as his body was completely obscuring the view.

What's all this talk of freaking declaration just keep batting there's two days left.

Cook to carry his bat? Good luck with that, Jimmy having 73 not outs.

I had a feeling Cook was going to be still there around stumps.

Trouble is we've only got two more scores of 50 plus in the innings so it's not a great lead.

We can still lose this. I keep thinking back to when Colly got that double ton.

Cook needs just 48 runs to reach 12000 test runs. Two more to pass Brian Lara's total.
