County Championship 2021 thread

Here's a thread to talk about the 2021 County Championship, which starts today.

Opening games:

Essex v Worcestershire

Notts v Durham

Warwickshire v Derbyshire

Gloucestershire v Surrey

Leicestershire v Hampshire

Middlesex v Somerset

Lancashire v Sussex

Northamptonshire v Kent

Yorkshire v Glamorgan

All matches have commentary from the BBC, plus various live streaming TV services, which (at least at the clubs that have any sense) can be readily cast to your TV from YouTube.

Enjoy the season everyone. I Apologise now for a rant about another Somerset batting collapse which leads to us relying on our bowlers to dig us out of a hole. Now that we don’t have Jamie Overton we won’t even do that as successfully!

Surrey have named a squad of 14:

https://www.kiaoval.com/main-news/su...AVABwtubn6hWGA

I wouldn't like to guess which three will be omitted (logically one batsman, one spinner, one seamer) as Surrey have a habit of making an unexpected choice or two for the opening game based on pre-season training. If Dunn, Virdi and Topley play that's a spectacularly weak tail, as none of them averages close to double figures.

Roy and the Curran brothers are unavailable due to the curse of the IPL.

In fact, they've actually got the game being played in Brighton, so wrong on two counts.

Merchant de Lange plays. I am not at all happy that Jamie Overton left and we signed him. Oh well, what’s done is done.

Banton opening in the championship - not convinced he has the game. Hope I am wrong.

Despite the ongoing situation it has never been easier to follow the county game live.

All today's commentaries are here:

https://www.bbc.com/sport/live/cricket/55341739

The advances in counties' video streaming services have been huge over the past year, and the best way is usually to simply go through the county's respective YouTube site, e.g.:

https://www.youtube.com/user/NCCCSteelbacks

If they don't do this by now, well, they're not worth bothering with.

If you have a smart TV you can then simply click on YouTube and watch away. We got one last spring and what a revelation, I simply don't watch conventional TV channels any more. The county cricket streaming has been a life-saver, clubs' quality of coverage is getting better and better so it's a proper TV experience. No expensive subscription fees to watch an absolute banquet of live cricket, or on demand whenever it suits, highlights and everything else.

To think it's really not that long ago that we were reliant on Ceefax, and if you were away from home or not in the UK, nothing (Somerset's viewership from Pakistan due to Babar Azam is extraordinary). It's an astonishing rate of progress.

It looks like only Hampshire, Essex & Sussex have chosen to bat first.

Somerset put Middlesex in. Craig bowls an over of lovely floated half volleys and they take 13. One over in and starting to think it might not be our season!

It's an excellent service. A bit of the Mitchell and Webb "that's a bad miss" snooker commentators about the local guys. Hopefully not as partisan as the US local commentators.

Sussex chose to bat but then have showed no interest in actually putting bat to ball. Unsurprisingly, the first wicket fell to the stumps being clattered with no shot being offered.

Has Alastair Cook lost his knighthood? He's no longer a Sir on the Crapinfo scorecard.

Durham 5-2, it's going to be a long season.

Same score for Sussex, still a complete inability to find any batsmen.

Maybe, Notts' batting might even it up though.

Could be over inside 2 days this one.

Ah, good shout. I'd completely forgotten my 2012 TV could do that. Much easier than my current arrangement which is hooking up an ancient and creaking PC to the telly. Will switch at lunch.
